As a Christian, I believe God created us for a purpose. So the way to achieve happiness in this life is to discover that purpose. Once we discover it, we need to fulfill that purpose. We refer to this as "doing the will of God." So in the case of Jesus, He was fulfilling His purpose, when He left His family. He was simply doing the will of God. Think about it. You have God-given gifts, talents and abilities. You also have desires and goals in life. There are things in life that bring you great joy and happiness when you do them. There are things that highly motivate you to act or do something. You also find yourself in particular locations, situations, and relationships. All of these things have to be taken into consideration, in determining what your purpose is. This is what Jesus did. He had the gift or healing and preaching. He desired to spread the Good News of the Kingdom of God. It brought Him great joy when people heeded His message. He is motivated by "zeal" for His Father's house. He found Himself in a time and place where people yearned for His message. So as Christians, we believe in imitating Jesus. So we need to do the same and integrate these different aspects of our lives. Once we do that, we'll be well on our way to discovering our purpose, and thus finding fulfillment in this life, even if it means making sacrifices, such as leaving our families. For what worthy goal is there, that does not require sacrifice to achieve it?

We also believe as Christians that God will provide for everyone's needs. So when the time comes for us to do what God created us for, God will provide for the needs of the parents we leave behind. Of course we should do all we can to help provide for them. Once we do that, then we leave it in God's hands and trust that He will take care of them also. One example is when we leave our parents to get married and start our own family. Or if we are in the military and we ship out to Iraq and leave our wife and kids behind. Simply leaving them is not a sign of disrespect. What would be wrong is if we abandon them. Abandonment is when we completely neglect our duty and responsibilities to them and no longer provide any support. The Bible does say we should provide support for our aging parents. So when the Bible mentions leaving one's parents, it is not talking about abandonment.

I read your inquiry about why would one leave their parents and or family for God and you said that it could be contradicting to God's teaching of honoring our parents... For me, when you follow God's call, you are also honoring your parents, you show the world how you were brought up, and prepared to heed God's call and make the difference. I would say that when you leave your family serve other people, this is not a sign of disrespect - similar to following your dreams. You have got to be your own person right, and I am sure your parents know for a fact how you needed to be the person that you wanted to be.

God is a perfect being who is beyond earthly things. One cannot achieve perfection without detachment from any earth pleasures. Our family is one of the close attachment we have here on earth which could hinder ourselves. God is our creator, even the creator of our parents and family. He is above everyone else.
