Do you think Warranty is provided just about the lifespan of the product?

Every product has a lifespan, but do you think the company who provide warranty will gives warranty to product based on the lifespan or it is your luck that the product get spoil immediately after the warranty expired. Just last week, my colleague Dell latitude e5500 hard disk corrupted, luckily it was the company laptop and warranty is 3 years. However, my sister wasn't as lucky. Warranty expired at May 23 2010 but now today the desktop cannot be opened. Warning sound appears when booting.
