Is it smarter to be a mob or an individual?

I recently watched a video on how mobs are smarter than the individual , but when I hear the word mob I get the connentation of pitch fork holding farmers chasign after Frankenstein! Ha .. I understand that it depends on the individual as well. The mob has different experiences so together they make a perfect knowledgable team , but one individual in the mov could stear them off a cliff. I guess this relates to the democratic way of voting. I could be wrong, the video was slightly elitist. So , I'm basically asking what is better a mob of people deciding something or an individual?
