would you make your partner choose between you and their families?

I've heard this happened from friends and in some movies too., and I wonder why they make their partners choose between them and their partner's families.., It will be a tough decision for them to make.., they will be torn.., and I don't like it.., If you really love your partner.., You wouldn't make him suffer and tear him by making him choose between two important options in his life.., I believe it is a selfish move.. and i will not definitely tolerate it if my partner would make me do the same thing.., I love my family as much as I love him..and he should understand that.. what do you think?
