What Damage To Your P.C. Can A Virus,spyware e.tc. Can Do?

I was just scanning my computer and removed a couple of junk files. Last year a virus had damaged my friend's P.c. quite badly. Can a virus Harm Computers hard disk also. Have you undergone or heard any such instances. I am quite tension free and rarely do scan my computer. Should i scan my computer regularly. What is the best free antivirus that you use or suggest?

Currently I am badly affected by a virus that is eating up my computer speed rapidly. It takes around 30-1 hr to get my pc speed back to normal. I am a heavy net user and that is the most probable reason to get the virus. A year ago I had a virus that continues to eat my hard disk space and got it formatted.
Really I curse the people who make these viruses, let their brains be fired instead of our computers (Sorry for being mean.... I am totally screwed with this viruses)

They pretty much slow a computer down or can crash a computer if it's serious also some spyware and virus can get information from your computer or send information to it that you don't want
