Can Some Body tell me about the importance of RAKSHABANDHAN?

What is the importance of the festival, how it orignated, and since when it is practice, Is the festival is celebrated only in Maharashtra or other parts of India too? Please let me know whateever is required to know about it.

shibham i just learned from a friend of mine that, sister is supposed to protect brother according to the hindu mythology, just opposite to what u are thinking, please check it with your friends or parents, i dont know the exact story, but it is somewhat like that.

Hello kartik, Shibam has provided the link, which is giving the details. I think in South, especially in Kerala people are not celebrating this festival. In north it is an important festival.
