Is physical relationship very important for a long term courtship?

It has been seen that people do get involved in physical relationships during courtship.But do you think its very much necessary?I do know that its very hard to resist but I would like to know its necessity.Is it the prime factor or is it the secondary one? Tell me what you all think.
