Petitions, do they actually work?

Lots of people have a cause, that can be to save animals or environment, anything. And to try and get attention from powerful people they tend to start Petitions and they try to get a certain number of peopl to sign up for their cause. I remeber an online petition but they where clever and the cause was to save whales in japan. So you would decorate an origami whale online and you could make a frase for him to say, then they would ship off, when a big amount of these origami whales got to japan they where to reduce whale killing. Do you think they really stopped? Do you actually think that if they reach their number of signatures th goverment or higher powered people will stop what they are doing? Have you ever heard of a sucessful petition?

They can work very well and make a difference if done right but I find that most petitions tend to be quite forcefully presented from the people who are asking people to sign it. This would probably make me not sign it even if I agreed with the subject of the petition.

Yes those who want us to sign it need to show us the cause without trying to force us to sign it. We only sign if we agree so why will they mak us sign something if we didnt. Thanks for the response :)

sometimes the peoples' voice does get heard by petition signing. if you have a certain cause you have to try anything if you really care about something important in your life. one is just a lonley number but the union of many people can bring about change or positive results. my local post office here in the u.k. was to be closed leaving many older people and disabled without easy means to get their money, an online petition stopped the closure as it became known to the press and the council.this may seem a small victory but a victory all the same. if you do nothing you get nothing.

I believe that some petitions could work, but usually those that are about small causes like this case (not saying that this case isnt important), but when it comes to a bigger view like stopping the killing of animals from diferent countries, i find it hard to believe that they will stop although i hope they do :) Thanks for the response
