What is the difference between house music and trance music?

I know the sub-genres of electronic music get quite detailed, but mainly i want to better understand how to classify an electronic song as progressive house, hard trance, psytrance, electro, etc. It would be great if someone could cite benchmark/quintessential/common songs /artists of the different variations. Thanks!
