I recently came across this question and wanted to know what you guys think. Also, if you want to know a bit of background before answering this question, I suggest you read this article and comment here as well. "Are Filipinos Asian or Pacific Islander? I came across this question from watching videos from YouTube. If someone would have presented this question to me a month ago, I would have answered Asian without second thoughts. Quite frankly, watching the said video, my initial reaction was “why is this person even asking?” But then I tried to research more on it. And this is what I found out. The first definition I saw was from an Ivy League school’s website. It says there that Asians are inhabitants of Asia. Well, that made perfect sense. What else should we be referred to, right? So let’s check the geographical location of Philippines. Well, no brainer there. Since we are in Southeast Asia, then hey! We are Asians right? But how about the other people whose countries are part of the Asian continent? People from India, aren’t they called Indians? Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq – would you outright call their citizens as Asians? This thinking might also suggest that people from Mexico and Columbia are Americans which I think will raise more controversies than the main question in this article. Then there’s the argument that we are closer to the Pacific region. Hence, when we are being located in maps, people are directed to Asia-Pacific. Question now is which region is that? Pacific Islands are states located beside (right) Indonesia and just on the upper right part of Australia. If..." Is it both?? I think it is both. Philippines is within the Asia continent and also is within the Pacific region. WeLL, I think it's two different things. The continent where we are, and the region where we are located at. It's too confusing at the beginning, but somehow you'll realize, both things are right. We can be referred to as an Asian, as well as being referred to as a Pacific Islander. But still, Filipinos are Filipinos and I am very proud of it!!

That's right. People should not try to put us in a box. We are diverse people.

I would say Filipinos are Asians. The country is an Asian country, no question about it at all. There are island countries along the east coast of the Asian continent, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia. These are all Asian countries, in the region of Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Hmm, Mexico is in North America. Can they be called Americans as well? Just a thought. India is also is Asia, no one calls them Asian for some reason...

I am more on the side of bein an ASIAN than bein a Pacific Islander... Simply knowin that we are part of Asia like our neighboring countries. But this is only my opinion and not something to be taken as a fact. Have a nice day everyday my fellow ASIANS and most specially to FILIPINOS. :)

You can say both. Philippines is in Asia continent and we are close to Pacific too. Therefore both are correct. These names are subjective to how we see ourselves. This perception could be an influence of politics, race and culture.

Both describe the Filipinos, but are not necessarily one and the same. Philippines belong to Asia, to the Asia-Pacific, to the Pacific Islands. It's the scope or perimeter that describes it best, as Asia or Pacific Islands.
