Pluto not a planet. Is that OFFICIAL?

I am still confused on what to teach my kid. Was it last year or 2 years ago that they said Pluto is not considered a planet anymore? But many opposed it saying that it should be considered a planet. So which is which? How do we consider something as a planet and not as a dwarf planet?

It was year 2006 when Pluto was officially declared "not a planet" although there is still much debate about it because only 400+ (or one fourth of total) astronomers voted on this. A full fledged planet is described as an object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become round due to the force of its own gravity. In addition, the planet has to dominate the neighborhood around its orbit. Pluto has been demoted because it does not dominate its neighborhood, Pluto's moon Charron is only half its size when other planets are at least twice twice as large as their moons. Also, bodies that dominate their neighborhoods "sweep-up" asteroids, comets, and other debris, clearing a path along their orbits. Pluto's orbit is somewhat untidy. There are over 40 dwarf planets in our solar system, including Pluto. There's lots of information available online... Good luck on your research :)

It is no longer considered a planet. You can explain it to your child that before it was a planet but now, it is discovered to be too small to be a planet.

I think it's based on size and mass of the planet. The mass of Pluto makes it too small to be classified as a planet. I don't know for sure how they classify planets, but I'm sure that you can do some searching online. Good luck.

hello damned idle. Yeah, that's really sad am sure the next version of books regarding science will undoubtedly be rewritten. from what i can remember, pluto was shred of it's original orbit from the sun. and any small dwarf that loose it's gravitational orbit are no longer consider a planet. i wonder, mercury is one of the oldest second size small planet.
