I'm planning to buy a laptop this coming October, what brand and model would you suggest for a first time laptop buyer/laptop owner? What productivity software should I install? What anti-virus software should I use to keep the laptop safe and secure? I'll be happy to hear from you guys! :)

First I would think of what your going to use the laptop for. If your a gamer then you going to need a better GPU to handle the graphics for the newer games. Also, if your going to hook it to a large LCD TV, a powerful video processer can be important. I don't know your price range, but I just picked up a MSI Intel Core 5i, 2.40 GHz, 4GB of memory, and a 500GB hard drive, for about $800. Newegg.com is the place to go or Tigerdirect.com for cheap computer stuff. As for software you will find programs that work for you. Check download.com for anti virus, they have a good selection of both free and pay anti virus programs.

The answer to this question would really depend on what your buying it for. Before I go any further with this comment though I'd just like to say I'm a PC Technician so I know a small bit about what I'm about to say. For your own sake don't buy a Toshiba laptop, every single day at least two of these come into my shop for repair, they're terrible things. If its your first time laptop I'd honestly recommend a HP branded laptop. They're decent reliable computers. I'd also recommend Dell but they tend to be a bit more expensive for the same quality machine. For your anti-virus I'd recommend Nortons Internet Security 2010, a lot of people don't like Nortons and would opt for something like Kaspersky but I myself personally use Nortons and usually when your buying a new laptop you'll get a three month trial version for free. Alternatively, if you get no anti - virus free with the laptop you can download a decent free anti - virus called AVG. If you work in an Office it may be an idea to try and get the seller to throw in a copy of Microsofts Office 2010 or earlier as this will come in for handy for Office work, creating charts, writing letters, managing files and numbers. If your getting it to play games on try to get a laptop with about 2Gbs of RAM installed and a decent sized processor so you know the computer will be able to play the new releases. Also, if your getting the laptop to watch movies on make sure to download the Kazaa Multimedia pack. This is a small file of about 25mbs which will install your video and audio codecs enabling you to play all formats of movies and audio files you will find online and believe me there are literally hundreds of types of formats so you will need this file. One other item of note when your buying the laptop, make sure to ask the dealer if the laptop has a wifi card installed. 80% of laptops sold today do but that means 20% don't so just make sure you get one. Thats all I can think of for the moment, if you want to ask me anything feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to answer you. Best of luck, Ronan

There are so many brands out in the market today. I personally use Dell Inspirion. I can only suggest you consider the warranties and upgrade models of any brand. Make sure you have a great virus protector. With the economy the way it is I am sure you can find very great prices so shop around for the great deals. Good Luck with your new laptop.
