What makes a forum moderator?

Is your typical forum moderator gamely employed in other jobs, full time? Or do they spend all their time on the WWW playing nanny to all within their sphere of influence? Are they primarily female or male? Do they prefer moderating with a big bag of peanut M&M's or with a BeerTender sitting nearby? Is is possible that we pass forum admins on the street and never know it? Do we really need forum moderators? Aren't we all old enough to moderate ourselves?

Unfortunately, not everyone is mature enough to be able to moderate themselves, even if most people are. There are plenty of trolls out there. So I think being a moderator is hardly an easy job. I think almost all moderators have other jobs though. You can't make a living off being a moderator.
