My previous dog, Nera didn't like the bath time. But she wanted so much to please me, so she sit quietly during the bath time. The dog I have now, Binne, enjoys baths. I wanted to make her feel confortable during baths from her first day with me. Every time I have to bath her, I use a lot of praise and the bath is some kind of reward for her. She jumps gladly into the tub when I say 'facem baie' (wich means "we take a bath" in Romanian). I always make sure the water is not too hot neither too cold, and I am careful not to drop shampoo into her eyes. About your dog's problem, you should first make him confortable in the place where you usually bath him. Take him to that place more often, reward him for just being calm there. After you accomplish that, you can start to add more stimulus to the scene. First, start the running water, without getting him wet. Reward him for being calm. Then, put a little water on his feet, and reward good behaviour. When he's confortable with that, get him all wet, without shampoo. Lots of praise is needed. Just take little steps at a time, don't rush him. The key to have him calm during baths is to be calm yourself. You know he doesn't like baths, so you're nervous about that. He feels your state of mind and act accordingly to your emotions. If you don't have time to teach him to be calm during bathing, you should know you can use some dry shampoo, without any water, of course. My dog isn't really scared of it, but he really hates it because he doesn't like water. I still haven't managed to find a way to wash my own dog easily, so I can't help you I am afraid, but I just wanted to say that this is indeed a pretty common problem with dogs!

I had a dog who hated baths! I would say something about giving her a bath and she would run and hide. One day I decided to not say anything about it but just get the stuff ready. It didn't work she would still run and hide from me! Even if I spelled it out, I guess there was something in my voice!

My dog (native) hates to be clean, yesterday I tried to drag him to be clean and he bark at me with a very loud voice. I bathe his mom first and then when I got the chance to put water on him, I did. I clean him near the gate while everyone who will pass the gate will see us. It's very awkward but I will not dare to move him cause I know he will flee. I guess there is no other solution but to corner him where he can't run away.
