I want to have a dog but...

I have always wanted to have my own dog ever since I was a kid. Sure we had pets like dogs and cats in the past in my relatives' household but they were not my own. Now that I finished college and have a job, I could actually afford to have my own now but the pending responsibility overwhelms me. I work as a call center representative and I'm always asleep or taking a rest when I'm home. I might not have time to play with my dog or take them out for a walk,..it just bums me out. They are so adorable, warm and fun to be with. *sigh* It's amazing how dogs can sense your exhaustion and then make ways to reduce your stress level. But right now, I just dream of having them as pets (I mean literally, I dream of them ahahaha)

If you live alone, it won't be a good idea to get yourself a dog. Because the dog will suffer if he is left alone for long time. Please evaluate how much time do you have for the dog, how much can you afford to spend for the dog (vaccination, dog's food, collars, dishes, beds, toys, treats). If you come to the conclusion that you are able to own a dog without making him suffer, get yourself a dog. If not, keep dreaming of having a dog. One day you'll qualify for a responsible dog owner.

thank you so much for that input, i never would've realized that one if you guys didn't mention it. I was so focused in my needs and wants and almost forgot the dog's welfare. and yes i agree, i will just have to wait until the situation favors us. at least i will have more time on thinking what type i should get and how to prepare for it. thanks again.

You're welcome. I know how it feels to want a dog and don't be able to have one. I always dreamt to have a dog, but my parents didn't want to bring a dog in an apartment. As soon as I finished my studies, I got a job, I start living on my own, and I bought my first dog. But until then, I had studied tones of books and magazines about dogs (there were no internet back then ) and when the time had come, I was well prepared for the little new member of my family.

If you live alone it may not be a good idea right now, so you really have to think about what you can sacrifice. It's more about the time than money. Having a dog, especially a puppy is like being a single parent. All the responsibilty is on you, and puppies are like babies - they require a lot of attention, and you have to train it young so you will have a good family pet in the future. When I got a puppy, I had a lot of problems leaving the dog while I was at work. The building manager was always calling me with complaints because the dog would cry when I wasn't there, and when I say cry it was more like screaming. She is better now, and is ok to be left alone, but it took almost 2 years of training, having someone check in on her during the day, and changing my living situation. If you are still really set on getting a dog, you could also look into a dog daycare service which I have also tried. That way the dog gets enough play time during the day with other dogs and usually is really tired of an evening - but this can be quite costly. Puppies are extremely cute, and are very hard to resist, but you need to make sure that this is a decision that you will feel good about years down the road. Good luck with your decision

thank you, that helped a lot. i guess they really are just like babies. i bet it will break my heart if i hear puppies cry. also considering the price of maintaining their health and all, i believe i'm going ti back down for the meantime. i'll have my own time of having one. it's a good thing i asked about it and you guys gave your thoughtd coz' if i decided to get one in a hurry then both of us will suffer.
