A coworker of mine was talking to a customer one day and found out a lot of customers think housekeepers make a lot of money cleaning rooms and that is the reason they don't leave tips. At some expensive motels they include the tip in the price of the rooms. At most motels, they don't and housekeepers get starting pay of just min. wage. Waitress get tips according to their service, why not housekeepers? If we do a good job, let us know by leaving tips.

Some maids make good money, others don't. And the same happens with waitresses. It doesn't really depend on how good they are at their job, it mostly depends on where they work. A maid in a 5* hotel casino will make lots of money because the guests are wealthy, if not rich. But maids in motels don't do as well, since most motel guests are not that financially comfortable. Personally, if I see the room is clean I will leave a tip. But I have stayed at rooms that the towels were never replaced and I needed to go myself to the front desk and ask for them. Of course I didn't tip there.

The motel I worked at charges around $100 a night in the summer. The place is a bit old but still in good shape. The customers say it is really cleaner than a lot of other places they stayed at. My question is if they can shell out that much money for 1 or more days stay, then why can't they leave even a few dollars tip? I would go by how dirty I got the room and if the room was cleaned when I got there. If I was staying a few days, then how clean they got it before I went back to my room. I would not tip if I did not get clean towels, etc.

Honestly I consider the price I pay for the room to cover the cost of the cleaning. Hotels are already quite pricey. However, if a maid gives me excellent service or goes out of her way to do things special for me or my family then I will give them a tip. Also if for some reason I cause them extra work I will tip as well. But I don't tip for normal standard room cleaning, most of the time we just ask for towels any ways and don't even have them come in.
