As someone who first gave birth almost 40 years ago I am amazed at how things have changed regarding mum's treatment after giving birth. Gone are the days of staying in bed for days and not going out for 10 days! This is a picture of my daughter with her new baby Olivia, just three days after giving birth - she looks pretty healthy and happy to me! She was home the day after having the baby and going out straight away - things are certainly far different for today'smums, don't you agree!!

I disagree with the insurance companies kicking new mothers out after a day in the hospital, but I do agree that they don't need to lie about a'bed either, not to say that being a new mother isn't hard, I'm sure it is - part of why I didn't want to BE a mother... However, I disagree with taking newborns out very shortly after birth, I don't think they should be exposed to the kinds of germs they might be exposed to by going out - on the other hand, people don't seem willing to step up and help new parents by shopping for them or sitting with the newborn so they can do those things they need to do shopping for supplies, etc...(eating out isn't one of them...)

I don't have a problem with babies going home as quickly as they do, but when a mother has a c-section, they still send them home after a day... I'm talking about taking newborns to WALMART or a restaurant!!!!

Birth is a normal physiological process, there is no illness (in most cases - granted some do have problems but they are in the minority) and therefore no need to be in hospital. Homebirths are back on the up - as they should be. Its obviously different for women who have had caesareans or complications, but if you have had a normal straight forward labour and birth, get away home and snuggle in your own bed and environment with your baby - they have much less chance of catching bugs there than they do in hospital.

Great in theory but not so easy in practise. Regarding home births - you have to fight to be able to have a home birth, I had two of my children at home and it was a fantastic experience, but the health officials(despite what they may say) do try to pressurise people out of home births. Out of my 10 grandchildren just one was born at home - and my daughter struggled to arrange that. With regards to getting away home and snuggle in your own bed just try it!! Without discharging yourself (and it would be very unwise to do so)they won't let you go straight home - this daughter in question had her baby at 10.30 one day but had to stay in for 24 hours even though she really wanted to go home!

In the hospital where my daughter had her baby it was 12 hours after the birth that they are allowed home.

Well, my first-born came into the world 29 years ago and I was in the hospital for two and a half days. I would have come home a day earlier except that my son developed jaundice and they wanted to keep an eye on him while treating him for that. Also, I was in labor for a very long time. I went to the hospital around 4 a.m. and gave birth to him at 8:34 p.m. that night. So, if everything went well, I most likely would have been in the hospital for less than 24 hours. With my second son, he was breech so I had a C-section. I had to remain there for seven days because my intestines were paralyzed for quite awhile after I had a saddle block. (I wanted to be awake for the birth.) They were trying everything to get my intestines working again but it took six whole days. In the meantime, my belly bloated up with gas and it looked like I was 12 months pregnant! Believe me, it didn't feel good at all. That's the ONLY reason I was there for seven days that time. I guess you could say I was lucky to have had these problems, huh? I got to rest a bit longer than I would have had everything gone well. Your daughter looks great and that adorable Olivia, well, she's adorable!

The jaundice thing always makes me laugh as ALL babies get it after a couple of days, but if you happen to still be in hospital they keep you in as you say to 'keep an eye on them'!!

All 3 child my children were C-Section. My first I was in the hospital for 3 days. I kept telling the doctor I wanted to be released. I felt good and I wanted to come home and be a mom. My second one I was in there for 2 days. After my third, my doctor told me he would release me within 24 hours. After the 3 kid I figured I would like a bit of a vacation...LOL. They released me within 24 hours, however, I started to hemeorhage the next afternoon, so back to the hospital I went. I think due to insurance rules these days, they release you way to soon. I felt fine when I was released, but apparently my body was say...REST!!
