My favorite sci-fi series (as of the moment) is back! J. J. Abrams X-Files-like TV series returns with an episode that Olivia-centric. If you’re like me, you’ve seen the Season 2 finale, and you already know that “our Olivia” is trapped in the “other” universe. It was a fantastic finale and the main reason why I wanted to see the new season. The season 3 premiere I think was a good one to introduce as to the other side, but the writers also used the first episode to give an excuse for Olivia to not always try to escape from that universe. (this will help them extend her stay on that side with a valid excuse). What the other side did was inject her with drugs and then brainwash her into thinking that she’s “their” Olivia and that she was just suffering a breakdown after the incident in the season 2 finale. Brilliant! Now the writers don’t have to agonize on ways how Olivia can escape the alternate universe. At least not until about half-way through the season, probably. “Stay there Olivia, while we focus on the other characters in the series.” the writers were probably saying. In the alternate universe, Olivia’s mother is still alive. Hmmm, who is his father? Was he ever mentioned before? She also has 2 co-workers, Francis and some other guy who I don’t know. Did he have a version of himself in our universe? I’m probably just used to seeing all characters in the alternate universe being in this universe as well. Of course they have the right to bring in new characters over there. They are the writers, I am just a TV fan. Kudos to the actor for wearing prosthetics until the series ends, or until his character is killed, whichever comes first. Astrid was stiff in the alternate universe, she looks even military. A great contrast to our lovable version of Astrid. I’ve read somewhere that the taxi driver was a known actor on another show, and I thought his performance was pretty good and he could become a recurring character in the show. What about Peter and Walter? They’re back on our side, with “Faux-livia”. They don’t have a clue that she’s not their Olivia, even if she’s been dropping hints like bird poop. Or maybe she is like that when she’s around Walter (I think Peter will be more suspicious). Peter is seen talking to some government folks, and these aren’t your usual government people who would have laughed at Peter’s crazy story about the other universe. At least they believe him. That’s the impression I got. Why wouldn’t they believe him though? Fringe is a real government branch as far as the show is concerned. We don’t learn a lot of Peter and Walter, except that Peter and Faux-livia are closer (only because he thinks she’s their Olivia), and Walter is still the scatterbrained genius that he is. I am sure we’ll see more of them in the coming episodes. Oh, the opening credits was the red one, meaning it’s an “alternate universe” edition. I think it’s a cool tidbit that they insert into the show. I’m sure they’ve scattered lots of “Easter eggs” in the first episode, but I am probably not familiar with them. Here’s to a great season 3!
