Does your kitten or cat hoard things?

Our tuxedo kitten, Muffin, loves to carry things around the house and find a place to stash them. We find his hoards all over the house. They used to be very obvious--on the landing on the stairs, next to his favorite rug, or under the kitchen table. Now that he is a little older, he is getting sneakier about hiding things and it often takes us days to find them! He takes socks, underwear, small blankets, mittens, the kids' toys, pencils--anything he get his mouth around. Since he has so many other "quirks", I was wondering how common this habit is. I've had many cats throughout my life (we have 4 now) and no other kitten or cat has acted this way! It is very cute, but can be annoying, too--like when he dragged off one of my son's soccer socks on the morning of his first game. Any ideas on why he is doing this, and is there any way to lessen it without taking away all of his fun?

I had a semi-feral who would stash stuff under a rug. I think its a feeding thing, where they think they need to save stuff for later. Since they aren't hungry, they don't need to stash food, but in some the instinct is stronger and they hide things they like... I'd guess the only way to keep him from making off with things you can't afford to lose is to keep those things away from him. Mandy liked straws, pens and pencils, we didn't mind the straws but started keeping pens in boxes out of his reach.
