what is google android??

I heard this mobile phone operating system is new in town, but I want to know something more about it. Is it superior to Apple's iOS? or it is just another open source OS..??
It has many features like GPS and all, quite cool operating system though, so any positive aspects of getting this OS??

It has been said android is based on Linux OS,but I don't think it's as wonderful as Linux,be a new OS,it must have something interesting,but whether it would be as good as Symbian,only time know it.I have also heard that Symbian would be open it's code too.Let's have a look at which OS would be the best one.
