I got in trouble for stating the truth. What did I do wrong?

In a social site I've been using a friend of mine posted a discussion about a group of troublemakers. Here is how the discussion went.
friend 1: Look at these guys *shows link* they're trouble.
someone else: They must have come from UP (University of the Philippines)
after a few comments from other people.
Angry girl: HEY! UP students would never do something that stupid.
after a few more comments from other people.
Me: @Angry girl, don't be so offended stupidity is everywhere. Even people from that school are capable of doing such. (yeah, people from that school did some crazy stuff like fraternity violence to kitten murdering, not all though but some did)
And then she got all angry and started cussing and telling people that I'm a jerk for spreading rumors that people from her school are retarded. While all I did was tell her a fact in life. So right now... She and a group of her friends are pissed at me and would want to beat the living daylights out of me.
What did I do wrong anyways? I just stated a fact. I don't see why she is so offended. And the weirder part is, people are supporting her. :|

It happens here too and within our personal circle of friends that people mis-understand a simple factual discussion and it gets all out of hand. It is really difficult to deal with people like this on social networking sites as so many begin to troll you.
I would say give it a few days as this group of people will certainly move on to yet another member to pick on at best. Then stand clear for a while of this group and socialize with others. As really there is nothing anyone can do about online personalities.

you said what you thought only^^ anyway dont care for her^^ and im sure that those people that are supporting her are from that school like her and dont want people to say what they think about their school or else noone will want to study there ahah^^ i guess thats why they are so pissed of with you^^ dont care for them^^ you have the right to say what you think of what they do. and kill kittens just for scare new people in school is too stupid and bad. also in my country in college they sometimes do very very bad things too. even worse than kill kittens :( they did a very bad thing really :( and scary one. they forced some guys to put a piece of brick attached in a rope attached in their d*ck and walk like that miles. can you imagine? i cant imagine the pain those guys felt 
and even police got involved in that bcs that was a crime, is not legal to do something terrible like this. poor guys
