Who in here is afraid of needles?

Can you share your experience when you had your skin pierced with a needle? I am not afraid of it since I am already used to it. I've been exposed to it since I was a child because I am a sickly person and back then, I get intravenous therapy (dextrose) at least once a year. I understand adults that are afraid of needles, the thought of having the sharp little thing hit you is so scary! Yes, it is painful... but it is just a little pinch. "Just like the bite of an ant", as some nurses will say to you. ....and I pity the cries of the child when they are pierced by that tiny needle. =(

I used not to be afraid of needles, but I became super scared when I literally cried in the emergency room because the nurse and the doctor pricked me 3x! They just punctured me when actually, they are not able to look for a decent vein to puncture! Man! it hurts so bad, I want to inject both of the doctor nurse to make them feel what I am feeling!!

Yeah It SHOULD NOT hurt. But when the needle poked my bone on my wrist it HURT so bad! It took them 3 WRONG puncture before they finally asked an EXPERT to do the shooting. Why did they have to wait for 3 wrong ones when they can have asked an expert after doing it the first wrong one? That's what I do not understand. Dont they know that the pain is not a joke? I felt like I have been experimented on. Jeez! My Hives on my body was already uncomfortable that I time, and the last thing I want to feel is another deym thing adding to my feeling.

Wow. You tried that? It really hit your bone? This is in your hands while the nurse tries to insert a dextrose needle right? I also tried this once and the site was bruised for 4days! and was so tender to touch. This happened to you too? Needles are dreadful little things! Pain is an awful thing to feel! One tiny pr*ck is okay but more it is just so bad.

It is not easy to find a vein especially when it is collapsed or hiding. It will be collapsed if the person is dehydrated because of high fever, diarrhea or some certain condition. It is also hard to find a vein when the arm is too fat or the person has an edema (swollen arm). Some people's veins are also thin that breaks easily when punctured. It is very hard to find a nurse/doctor that is a sharpshooter especially on children. This population is the most difficult for needle insertions. I understand what you feel. Needles hurt but it is not that bad. It depends on many factors on getting the procedure wrong.

well im in the medical field and i say that i have an experience with kids and the term its just like the bite on an ant or a bee. i think this is the worst term to say to kids/patients. i find it amusing that it is still being taught by some professors on how to handle this kind of situations. i think the a better phrase is "its just gonna hurt a little bit" so the person would know what to expect and brace for it. when i was still a student, we where taught to p rick ourselves or even get our own blood ourselves to test if we are already used to it.

well i used to work in a hospital with mostly patients who are under 18 and mostly children. the kids have an inclination to scream when it comes to the color white. crying and screaming was a part of my life before

Good thing we are in the medical field to know more about these neeedles. So we are the ones responsible to tell our patients how it feels and clearly explain the procedure, right? So that they would have something to expect. Yeah, that would be a better phrase to say it! I also say to children/kids the ant bite but never the bee sting since bee stings it think are a lot more painful.lol but i always say after that, "You will feel a little pain but this procedure will just be a second."

haha. Yeah. I know. Even when we wear Pedia uniforms, they hide and don't want to go near us right? Kids could be very difficult to handle. *sigh* They are not friendly to strangers... most especially those in the medical field. lol

haha. So funny! You just try not to think of it until it is all done. You should learn how to tolerate pain and face fear. It could really be overwhelming but it is all in the mind! You can do it!

Well, I'm not "afraid", but I do detest the thought of thin, sharp metals poking or cutting through veins and fleshy stuff. I don't know why, I simply don't. I can look at the needle in my arm, but I usually prefer not to. I don't get nauseous, but it feels uncomfortable, both before the injection and during it. I also hated it when I was little, but I was always quiet during everything - consults, tests, injections etc. About two years ago, the government offered free general consults, and I had to draw blood. The nurse must have pierced a nerve or something like that, because I felt a sudden sharp pain, like a sting, but incredibly powerful. It hurt so much a tear came to my eye, as a physical reaction, not an emotional one. Still, I'm not "afraid", but that episode just made me despise needless even more.

Now I can prove that everybody has a mild anxiety about needles. They simply don't like the thought of it that's why they have minimal fear/anxiety.. but most of them could overcome this fear. It also depends on someone who will inject you, right?

I'm quite scare of needles, when it comes to injections. IT's the thought of it, entering my skin slowly, while i have to look at it! Even if it's not painful, i still feel the pain in me. It's just psychological to me. I'm quite tamed even i'm scared of it. I won't be screaming and shouting before the needle enters my skin. I will only be grabbing my bf's hand tight and scratch it a few times!

That is a good way to fight pain - inflicting pain on others especially on you bf.lol Just joking. =) Well, that really works! I knew many people who does that and it really works. You try diverting yourself too, like watching TV or thinking other things aside from getting a shot. Also try relaxation techniques like deep breathing. Each of us has their own ways for fighting fear. =)

I’m one of those people who are afraid of injection. Though it’s not really painful for me, I just don’t want to see the needles being injected to me and see the blood extracting from me. But I am not among the baby cry ones during injections. I just close my eyes and wait for it to be finish. One worst experience I have with the needles was when I did my blood test for my prenatal. It was not the nurse who performed the injection it was a lady doctor. Would you believe that it took her 6 times of needle insertion before she extracted blood from me? I was not actually nervous, my nervousness occurs after her severaI unsuccessful insertion. I was really dread up during her fourth insertion and I have to grab my arms away from her and told her to stop and better do it next time, but she insisted to continue and finally after 6 insertions she succeeded. I did not come back again to her clinic.

she was my 1st OB, and defenitely i changed OB, now she's not my OB anymore. Yes, she thought i was dehydrated so she let me drin a glass of water but it still it didn't work. It was really a terrible experience.
• Philippines

How long did you drink the water before she did it? Would that work when you drink a lot of water for only a few hours? I think it will not work. Maybe an electrolyte drink can make it more faster... I also happen to change my OB doctor on my first pregnancy. But not because of these needle insertions anyway. We always feel something when we don't want the doctor and we end up meeting another one. And that could relieve us from a terrible experience!
• Philippines

Really? What kind of doctor is she? Is she your OB doctor? 6 times is terrible! Maybe you are dehydrated at that time that's why your veins collapse or shy away from the needle. But i think, it is more easier to get a blood sample than to insert an IV cath (dextrose needle). I do IV inserts all the time and I never reached "take 6". Wow. What a terrible experience. It places more fear to the patient if it is taken more and more times.

Although actually it is not so painful to have a shot. But I am scared of the needles. I don't really know why. Whenever I have a shot, I will look around and try to avoid to see the needle. I love China

Everybody does this and the nurse,doctor/medtech would actually tell you this so that to take your mind off the needle and to divert you for some other things.

I'm 26 now but I'm still afraid with it. The last time I was injected was last year and it made me feel so weak. I could feel the weaknesses all over my skin for 3 days. I think if you concentrate on what scares you, you will really really feel the pain, and thats what happened to me lol

I think you are right. You concentrate more on what scares you, you think of the pain more and you focus on the fact that "a sharp needle entering your skin" which is really a scary and eww thought and feeling. -- That would make you weaken. So next time, avoid this. It's all in the mind!

I'm not afraid of being pierced with a needle. In fact the last time I was having a physical exam and a nurse stuck a needle on my arm to get some blood, I almost didn't feel anything. What is weird with me is that I am not afraid of my skin being pierced by a needle but when I saw someone being injected with a needle, I can't help but feel weak in the knees and I have to look away.

Yeah, I feel the same way like you do. I just pity those kids crying just because of the needle... because their little cries are genuine!I can take to look at some adults being injected by a needle. I do injections and inserting needles in my work so I am fine on those adults who really do not react or might react on the piercing.hehe It is so difficult and it is a heavy heart for me when it comes to the kids to see their reaction. So the best way for me is to tell them about it and how it will hurt a little bit. I am just doing my job kids.

Personally, I am not afraid of needles. But I have this office mate, a big male guy (about 5'9" and 200lbs) who is quite afraid of needles. Every year, in our company, as part of our medical check-up, we are to give blood samples and the way nurses get samples is by piercing a finger with a needle. You can really tell that he is afraid because he paces a lot and sweat.

haha. yeah, it is funny sometimes to think of a really big man afraid of a tiny needle. My husband is also afraid of it and the he gets pale after the injection. And then the funny part is that after the blood sample was taken, he hurriedly goes in the trash can and acting like he wants to vomit.hahah I think he is afraid of the needle and the blood!

Hi, When I was a small kid, I was afraid of needles and till now, I am still fear scared when I really need an injection when I fall sick. Only come to the worst case, then I will choose go for an injection,at least I will have speedy recovery. My son also afraid of injection and last two weeks ,he has 2 injections due to high fever and lucky after that 2 injections,he slowly get well. My mother always say " don't afraid",poking by a needle is just like an ant's bite, and it is true....the doctor can poke super fast and within few second, the injection is done. However, I wish I won't need to go for an injection in future...

The hospital personnel would just clearly explain to the patient so to remove fear. It is a responsibility of a nurse and/or doctor or other health personnel to explain the procedure really....even explaining it with little kids that can already understand is very important. They need this so that the children will cooperate more.

I am afraid of needles because I know that I have small veins and if the phlebotomist can't find the vein they jam the needle in to try and draw blood. I always bruise and it is so tender I sometimes cry. I have to get IVs a lot because I have a stomach condition that I have to get endoscopies for. I found it helps if I breathe deep while they are trying to put the needle in.

You find a way to reduce this anxiousness and fear. Thanks for sharing it. Well, I pity those patients with small thin veins. You only don't suffer during the injection but also afterwards since the injected skin would also be bruised and still painful. I have tried this once! And maybe this is because the one who extracted my blood hit a small thin vein.

The doctor or nurse would often say having a needle stick in your arm is like feeling the sensation of a mosquito bite. It stings like a bee. But since I was a child I was not squeamish about injections. I believe that it is necessary to make me feel better when I am so sick. Dentist also use them so that I won't feel the pain of having a tooth pulled. It depends on the one administering the injection whether I fear the needle. Some have light touches(One that cause little pain) some are have "heavy holds" where one can feel the sting. I prefer the former.
• Philippines
1 Oct 10
yeah. the needle expert - the one with a light touch. where you can just feel a very faint pain and then in a second it is finished! And then your skin would not be bruised so much after the taking. I encountered a blood extraction one time that bruised my arm. After the extraction, the pain did not go away for more than hours. Maybe this was because a "heavy hold".

I am afraid of needles that's why I didn't pursue my medical studies. When I was first admitted in the hospital which was last year, I was really afraid to have dextrose with me. Unfortunately I needed to be injected with dextrose because I was admitted for one week. In the third day of my admission in the hospital, aside from the fact that I am afraid of needles, I also had a traumatic experience due to a careless nurse. When it was time to transfer the IV infusion from my left hand to my right hand, the nurse failed to infuse it successfully which caused my blood to squirt. I really cried and my mom got mad with the nurse. The medical technologist did the infusion and he was really an expert of it than the nurse.
• Philippines
1 Oct 10
I understand that... inserting a dextrose needle requires special skills and maybe that nurse, sure had the skills because all nurses need to study this. Nurses are not allowed to insert if they did not take the IV therapy course or if they are not yet certified IV therapists. But another factor is, maybe the nurse was nervous upon insertion or maybe she did not hit the vein. It is really difficult to do this... especially when the patient's veins are hiding or is not clear. Some may take many times like more than 5, most of this happens with children or elderly who are really dehydrated!!! My husband also did not pursue his medical studies because of needles and blood.haha

Some are scared but most of them can overcome this pain. Since this is just like an ant's bite.
