Activites to do with children under 5

I have recently started a Childcare course at college. This course involves 50% placement in a childcare setting. At the minute I have been placed in a setting with children aged 0-5. As part of my course I have to come up with activities I can do with them at some point during my time there. I am prticually struggling with activities for 0-1 year olds and I would apprieciate your help. Thank you =]

Children between the ages of 0-5 tend to want to do so many activities at one time so one needs to be very creative when it comes to dealing with them. I have spent time with kids and so apart from the normal singing games e.g row your boy and london bridge, i have come up with a list of some of the things you could do. i dont know if this will apply with you but its worth a try 1.flashing color lab most kids find colors fascinating so to teach them how colors are made from 3 primary colors, take 3 balloons(make sure you keep the balloons out of the children's hands. 2. Take a flashlight and stretch the balloon over it and hold it in place with a rubber band 3. In a darkened room, have a child flash the flashlight on the wall or ceiling. by adding different balloon 'filters' you can make a variety of secondary colors(Blue + Yellow= Green, Red + Blue= Purple ). if you have several flashlights you can place one of the primary color balloons over each one and do the mixing on the wall or ceiling. Another good variation of this theme is if you let the kids hold the flashlights with the primary color balloons, get a paper bag with h0les on the bottom and wrap it around the torches and ask them to move the flashlights. it will create a rainbow like color dance and this will certainly create amusement and fun for the kids. Tell me if this idea is of assistance and if you need more from me i would be delighted to give you more ideas

thank you for the great idea. Just a slight question reguarding the balloons. As my placement aren't keen on balloons being involved would i still get a similar effect if i used tissue paper or something of that sort?

well, i am not sure if tissue paper would give a good turnout. but i guess its all a matter of experimentation. Maybe i could give you another idea which would be fascinating i call this WATERSCAPE you will need a)plastic jar wit tight lid b)water c) cooking oil d)food coloring e)flashlight find the jar with tight lid. add equal parts of oil and water, then several drops of food coloring. start off with one color, let the kid(s) shake up the jar and watch what happens as the oil and water separates and the oil swirls and dances. then try adding another color and watch the 2 mix and transform in the jar. as the kids experiment with different colors, try shining a flash light through the side of the jar or lace a colored filter on the flashlight. This activity is almost the same as the latter but i am sure this is more simpler and will be able to capture the kids' imagination.
