There must be some truth to the rumor that smoking cigarettes damages brain matter. Most of the smokers that I have seen are the rudest, thoughtless and most obnoxious people that I have EVER SEEN! I ride the bus most places that I go so I see hundreds of people every day. I would like to think that I am not prejudice but I can not honestly say that about smokers. Unfortunately, those few smokers who are considerate are small compared to all of the other smokers who are just plain jerks. I see people take a drag on a cigarette right before going onto the bus and then blow the smoke in the driver's face when they are paying their bus fare. That dangerous second hand smoke goes into the ventilation system causing that dangerous smoke to be recirculated through the closed air of the bus (or a building)over and over again. Far to many smokers just throw their butts away without any thought. Many of them throw their cigarettes on the ground or through the air (not caring where the butt lands) when they are standing next to an asstray. Another annoying thing that most smokers do is smash the cigarette butt on just about anything. Decorative glass blocks at the bus station, the seats where other riders have to seat on at the bus station or shelter or even on the bus it's self (I would light one up just so that I could smash it onto that guys car, if he ever gets one, and see how he liked it.) One bus driver walked by a young women who put her cigarette out on a bus shelter wall. He politely asked her not to do that explaining that the bus system would rather spend money on increasing service and adding routes than having to wash the bus shelters all time, which is a very good point. She got all bent out of shape yelling that it is metal, it will wash off. I can only imagine what her house looks like, being filthy like that. Who wants to sit in a smell nasty shelter with burn marks everywhere. I think that if given a choice between two shelters, one next to another, she would sit in the cleaner one. Regarding her arguement that it will wash off, I wonder what she would do if someone leaned over her lap and released diarrhea on her? It shouldn't matter, according to her logic, it will wash off. I don't think that she would see it that way.

I never acted this way when I smoked, I always made sure I could stump it out in one of the many state provided wall mounted ashtrays we have here. Maybe your state should follow suit. Austria is very big on smoking, a hell of o lot of people do it and i'm sure it is the only country in Western Europe which still allows smoking in public places, including restaurants and the like. There are no butts on the floors, no burn marks and no litter from the packs. Maybe it's a culture thing, but there are no obnoxious rude smokers i've come across here, and I hope it stays that way so I can continue to have nothing bad to say about them, so long as I don't retake up the habit and damage my health, we can all live in harmony.

I am in the small group of considerate smokers, and I wish that could be a larger group. I tend to agree with you on this, many smokers are rude, don't care about anyone around them, and it's just wrong. I mean, how many smokers walk by you and blow smoke in your face, not caring that you don't want it there? When I'm out, I try to keep it away from anyone walking by me, it's just common sense to me. I try to throw my butts in the sewer if I'm on the streets, even dropping a butt in front of a cop is considered littering, so I do try to avoid it. At home, I have a can I throw my butts into, it just looks neater than having butts littering the backyard. If smoking was ever banned in public, a lot of people would be angry, but it would only be the smokers who were bothered by this ban.

I think that ignorance and thoughtless depend more on how people are raised than if they smoke or not. I find the title of your post rather thoughtless, if you don´t mind my saying so, even if you don´t smoke. You are very agresive to many people and place all smokers in the same basket. You will go farther being more generous to the rest of the world. You might even help someone quit if you didn´t use arguments such as "regarding her arguement that it will wash off, I wonder what she would do if someone leaned over her lap and released diarrhea on her? " Pity!

This is not just my opinion, but from many people that I have talked to about the subject. Take a seat on a bench or on a bus and just watch people for awhile. It will become clear that a majority of smokers are rude and inconsiderate. Even smokers that I know admit this!

You are very right about something you said in response to another member: "I've been told that mean people will get what's coming to them. They say, "What goes around, comes around". I guess we'll have to wait and see." Poor rude and thoughtless people have it coming. Have a nice day without smokers around!

It is sad to say that my husband smokes at least 2 sticks a day. He would smoke outside of our house, usually in the company of his so called "FRIENDS". I would always complain of his smoking because the smell of the nicotine would stick to his fingers, his shirt, his face and to where ever the smoke would go. How I just HATE it. Sometimes, it sticks to the seat of our car. Wew! I keep reminding him of the effects of smoking, but we would just end up fighting. Sooner or later, when he would feel the effects of smoking, that would be the time when he would understand what I was telling him.

I agree with you to a point, but I know some really, really nice people who are smokers. Some started when they were young, and just couldn't kick the habit. It's incredibly hard to quit, and I don't think you should judge people based on their habits.

I mentioned that there are some smokers who are considerate of others. I am commenting on the ACTIONS of the other smokers. The opening line was a joke.

You know, I have said that the opening line was a joke. When I think about it, though, I have to wonder if there could be any truth to it. After all, since many people have agreed with what I have said about MOST smokers being rude and thoughtless, you have to wonder...

Yes I saw many people who are smoking at public places but really it is banned smoking at public places. But they never care for this and try to smoke always. I think these types of peoples are thoughtless and ignorable who never cares for others. I think police should be punished that types of person after caught them.

That is an idiotic statement. There are many very intelligent, successful people who smoke. The habit does not make the person who they are or affects their intelligence levels or personality. That is bogus.

rude smoker - a women smoking and blowing smoke in a man's face--man couchs
I realize that not all smokers do the things that I am discribing, that is why I said "MOST". Of all the smokers that I see in a average day, the nice smokers are TOTALLY outnumbered. I was shocked when even some of my co-workers who smoke say that can't stand people blowing smoke in their faces all of the time. See for yourself. Make a point of watching people smoking and see how it turns out. Hell, you don't even have to do that. Just drive down the road and watch people throw butts out of their car windows. By the way, the opening line was a joke. Jokes are often used to start a topic in articles and speeches for example.

Yes I must agree to you someway. Smoking is habit. Sometimes we cannot see the truth because we enjoy the habit, a habit whether it is good or bad to our health. When a habit meets the highest level, it is addiction. Smoking is really dangerous to our health and sources of risks, complications and diseases. Sometimes a person ignore the truths just for the sake of self-indulgence. You cannot help these people but always give them a sound, friendly advice.
