how do you break the ice?

If you happen to be in a foreign country where you've got nobody to talk to, how would you break the ice with a stranger? I've read that the best is to talk about how nice the weather is because it is something positive and common in the two of you at the same time. How about you, how would you break an ice with a stranger?

I would probably talk about the weather or the culture of the country, trying to find out the history of the country and so on. I think the weather brings people to talk more than culture, or history as not everybody knows about history of the country an not everyones wants to talk about the culture.

if you're in europe, the weather is always great to bring up. when i'm in a new place, i always for directions as politely as i can and those who aren't too busy are always more than eager to help and curious about you. however, the easiest thing to do really is smile genuinely...contrary to some beliefs, you don't need a reason to smile.=)

In England I would say it is definately best to say something about the weather! As a second idea I would say to ask someones advice on something simple like where is the best place around here to get a cheap cup of tea and maybe something to eat or to ask if there is a McDonalds around here somewhere. Mind you 9 times out of 10 I bet you would get the "sorry mate, I am a stranger here too" reply lol

I think every person is not of same behaviors. And I think if I visit any foreign country then at least one person I could find to chat with them. Because there are also many good peoples who always help to others. I think not every person but at least some persons may give me help. And I can talk to them.
