Headace, snory nose and floating eyes - a simple cold with a rhino - virus. Nothing bad but feels like you been hit buy a car. So what should you do, stay home from work or put in some aspirin and go to work. It is an easy thing for me, I can not afford to stay home for a simple cold so I have to go to work. Even though I feel I should stay in bed and sleep it of. Stupid? Madness? I know it is - but my budget cant afford loosing one day of work-money.

How about all your co-workers? Can they afford to lose a day? Because you are carrying all your germs to work to share with them. Everything you touch ends up with germs. Every time you sneeze, you spread germs. Every phone you talk on, spreads germs. How about any customers you wait on during the day? Can they afford to lose a day? Some people may be hit with worse things than the cold you have, simply because you shared all you germs with them. Maybe they will go into bronchitis or pneumonia, but that's okay, because you didn't miss a day at work. Sorry, I know times are hard for everyone right now, but being selfish enough to put everyone you come in contact with at work at risk is neither smart nor friendly. Stay home unless you are isolated in a separate building from the rest of the world.

Well that is so true, I agree with that to 100 % however none can afford to stay home for a simple cold. I work as a assistance nurse for elderly care, so when they get sick me as a assitance nurse I also get sick.

Wow, you are soooooo right. I agree totally. There are billboards around my community that say - 'sick is not welcome, stay home.' I love the old fashioned way: stay home, stay quiet, stay in bed.

Since the elderly are more apt to have a cold move into a much worse condition, I hope as a medical professional, that you wear a mask to take as many precautions as possible. Unfortunately for you (fortunately for us) you chose a profession that provides exceptional opportunities to contract diseases. My mom always said, "Hon, if you get sick, don't go to the hospital. More folks die there than anywhere else!"

It's a no win situation, isn't it. If you stay home, you miss work and that costs you money, and possibly the ire of a boss. But if you come to work, people are like, why are you around here and spreading your germs? A person just can't win. I hope you feel better.

You got the point AmbiePam. That is exactly what it is about. I have this cold every year the same time of the year and I have not stayed home yet...hehe. And I wont either. Lucky me, I only had to use max dose of aspirin and sleep it of. Today I am fit for fight again....

Unfortunately in the time we're living, many people, like you, can't afford to stay home. I have a friend who was so sick last winter that she called in at work to take time off. Her idiot boss told her that if she didn't come to work, she would be fired. That's ridiculous. The problem with your situation is, the more you work, the less you rest and the longer it will take to recoup. The other problem, of course, is the risk you put others in of infecting them as well. I have another friend who has a very low immunity and when he's around someone who may have nothing more than a sniffle or a slight cold, he'll get so sick that he's out of commission for about 3 months. Doesn't seem fair to me. I have absolutely no problem at all staying home even if I only feel that I'm on the verge of getting something. I just wish that it was as easy for everyone else to do that as it is for me. You'd feel better faster and others won't be infected.

I work as a assistance nurse for elderly care, this means I most of the time work with people who is sick in vary ways. So if they get sick so will I. This may happen often. Now, I do not get sick very often and yet I have not stayed home for one day or more and I have decided as long as I can walk and talk I will go to work. I managed to get this cold of my back during my day of suing maxdose aspirin and lot of sleep. However, I also feel that some times we may have to consider the bed when you fell the body cant manage your thoughts. I learned that last year I was sick. Then I did work for three days in a raw and when I got home I stayed in bed for three days in a raw sleeping - still it took me almost two weeks to get back to normal - I wont do that again.

Everyone's situation is different and the fact that you're in the nursing field does make it easier for you to pick up illnesses. I'm sure you will use sound judgement and your decision will be just fine. Sometimes life is one trial and error after another. It sounds like you had a real hard time last year. Hopefully you stay healthy enough that you won't have to worry or wonder if you should go to work or stay home.

I felt this on my own many times. I went to work even very sick and I regret now. I realized that this made my suffering longer than usual and there are bad consequences now. Rest and treatment in case of cold for example, shorten the sickness period. That is you get better more quickly. Then if you don't rest you may look as if the sickness is gone, but it can come back stronger. Health is the most important element of life, that's for sure.

Was sleeping and yet after a week I had to see the dr. I wont do that again, this time I was of work for one day and used maxdos of aspirin and lot of sleep and the next day it was gone....

If you really cannot stay home to sleep it off, try making some soup with lots and lots of garlic. You cant do this at work so do this as soon as you get home. After taking all of this garlicky soup, take your asprin and sleep. Way to disguise the garlicky taste is Sautee the garlic with oil and add ready made chicken broth or any other broth you like. Do this whenever you start feeling sick with cold. i hope that it will work for you like it has worked for me who is a stay at home mom and got no medical leave whatso ever.

Thanks for the tip. I will try that next time. This time maxdose of aspirin and lots of sleep during the day and night managed to get rid of it. It was gone the next day and I could go to work in the evening.

Oops I forgot to add that the garlic should be chopped or grinded. Here I always buy a tub of chopped garlic from the supermarket and try to never run out of them.

hello anetteh! althought you love to go for work because youll be losing your day salary, but think of your health situation first and those people who loves you and cares for you. if your sick and have colds with virus, better for you to stay at home. if you'll be working for the sake of money, think of yourself too. if you'll go to work you will only worsen everything, since you got a virus, some of your co worker can also get colds because of you. better to stay home, have rest, drink a lot of water, enough sleep, take the right medicine, and the next day youll be feeling fine., ready for another's day work. so dont feel regret to any cent that will be lose, think of yourself, worth a million of you. :)

Hehe, you are so right. To be honest, I do not have one sickday since I started work. But yes, I have had a few colds before. I am not surprised as I always get it this time of the year. Same week, same weekend. I have told my self, if and when I can not get out of bed, then I stay home. But not for a plane simple cold. I do feel better today than yesterday so I guess the day of I had yesterday did the trick. The day of was schedueld so did not loose any money on that one....Thanks for responding and happy mylot day to you.

I don't get sick that often so when I do get a cold I get a bad head cold. Running nose, watery eyes, stuffy nose and most cold medicine does not relieve or eliminate the symptoms. About the only thing that does relieve is Benedryl and even then sometime it does not work but makes me incredibly sleepy. So in answer to your question - I stay home. I work to closely with co-workers and the customers so it is uncomfortable when you feel and look like your nose is running off your face!

If a simple cold I think no need for us to stay at home. But if we suffer from flu and fever much better to stay at home for a little bit of rest.. Have a nice day!

yes, I agree with that. I did that mistake last time I was sick and it ended up with three days of sleep and took me longer to get well.

I say stay at home. When you're sick, you wouldn't be as productive as you usually are when you're healthy. You tend to lose focus too, cause there are so many things going on around you and it's hard to do anything when you're sick. That's why I definitely think you should just stay home when you're sick, and when you're feeling better, make up for the work that you weren't able to do when you're sick.

I will take medicine and stay home to rest especially when I have flu, runny nose, and sneezing. because everyday I go to work by bus, walking and train. So if I still go to work that day, I won't only affect my work mates but also people in public, bus, and train. I work in a very famous and expensive cafe, my boss don't want anyone who have flu to be around until they get recovered. Because if the customer sees one of the stuff having flu, they won't even enter our cafe because they don't want to get affected and bring it back to their household.

Well, I should have done so the last time I was sick. I did not. I had a plain simple flu but still went of to work for three days in a raw, after the last working day I got home and fell down on my sofa feeling real bad, fell a sleep and stayed a sleep for two days. It then took me almost two weeks to get back to normal. This time, I did use maxdose of aspirin and sleept all day and night. And the morning after it was gone, felt normal and went of to work later on that day as I had the evening shift.

The ideal option is to stay at home. Colds are caused by viruses. It's a very minor illness but it causes a lot of discomfort. The best way to treat a cold is to take a lot of fluids and a lot of rest. Working at the office with a headache, stuffy nose, watery eyes...is not productive at all. And if you force yourself to work when your body is telling you to rest, recuperation takes longer. Thus, it is better to miss 1 day off work than missing 2 or 3 days because your body could not recuperate well.

Well i preffer to stay at home when i am seriously sick or having a heavy headache or stomachache as it will bother me all the time if i go out. But if i have a light headache or anything like that then i would definitely go out and do what i do regularly.

If it's just a cough and runny nose I don't stay home because of it. Those can be handled. But if I have a fever and chills and sweating I can't go anywhere. Also if there is pain and fatigue I sometimes can't get myself to go outside. Even going to the doctor is a challenge, I can't really see myself getting anything done in that state anyway. It's better to rest it out than torture yourself for nothing and not get anything done anyways because you feel so bad.

This time my cold was gone the day after. But the last time I did work for three days in a raw, that ended me up on the sofa sleeping for two days in a raw and I did not get my self back in two weeks. I never do that again. I guess I did not have fever this time. Since maxdose of aspirin did the work.

Hello Anetteh! I understand your situation because I also experience that. For me if I can still manage to walk and do my work accurately and effectively then I opt to go to work so that my students won't miss any lessons for that day. But if Im experiencing runny nose, bad cold and cough I'd rather stay at home and take a rest so that the virus won't spread anymore to my students and colleagues and I can regain my strength.

if it is possible then why not. a day of rest and drink a lot of liquids can make you better on the next day. if you will take a whole day rest it will make you get recharged, just like a cellphone har har har. so it is better to take a day rest and be back to work again tomorrow. that is if you are allowed to do so, i guess you can not work properly even you like to go to work.

hehe, I had the day of on my scheduel yesterday and I got this cold yesterday. I had lot of liquids and did sleep most of the day. Had one day of max dose of simple aspirin and today I do feel better. So I will be able to do my job this evening. But you know, nurses, doctors, assistance nurses are the worst people when they are sick. They do advice other people to stay home, but would never stay home them selfs. As a assistance nurse I guess I am no better.

Hi, When I am sick, I will opt to stay at home and have a good rest. Of course, if just a normal sickness like flu, cough, slight fever, I am still able to carry on with my daily activities. If the condition is getting worse, I will quickly rush to doctor for medication and will rest at home till I am fully recovered.

hehe, my daughter got sick with the need of medication. She first went to see a nurse who took a test to see if she was in need of medication. She was sent home with simple aspirin and was told it would be better in a couple of days. This was on friday, on sunday my daughter went to the dr again, and this time she got the medication needed. One week later she had to go to the dr in the middle of the night becouse she was not even better. No matter, sometimes you do not get what you need even though you go to the dr......I do not if I do not really have to.

I have a great job and it comes with great benefits. I have 40 days paid sick leave (about 3 days every month), so money is not really going to be an issue. Whenever I feel really sick, I just tell my boss and then go back to bed. I would also call my doctor. I rarely get sick, so I wouldn't risk going to work especially if I feel like I've been hit BY a car.

Lucky You...I will lose a hole day of salary if I stay home, that means the first day I get nothing, from the second and 14 days fort I only get 80% of the salary if I stay home. But as long as I can stand up on my two feets I would not stay home for a simple cold. Lucky me, the cold is now gone...one day and night of sleep and max dose of aspirin did help a lot.

Not feeling well also needs to rest, even if you feel you're okay you also need to take a rest and take medications for a fast recovery and you can go back to work immediately.Don't be to stressful to work to avoid sickness.

I really do not go to the dr for medication. I only use simple aspirin mostly. And since I had the day of I could use the maxdose during the day and sleep it of. It was gone the morning after and I could go to work in the evening.
