Are references really important in a resume?

So here's the story. I applied in a CVS store online and then called up the store to follow up my application. The manager said he hasn't seen my resume yet and asked if I could just fax it directly to him instead. So I went to the nearest FedEx Kinko and faxed it. Then I went home. Upon arriving, my dad asked where I've been. I said I faxed my resume to CVS. Then he asked me, "Did you list down references?" I said, "Uhhmm... no." Then he began scolding me for not doing so. He was yelling at me, "What???? You didn't write down references?? I'm telling you, they're not gonna hire you! You're just a fresh-graduate and have no real job experiences yet!" After hearing those words, I went into my room and cried. :'( Are references really that important?

Listen hon, we get better and better though all experiences during job hunting. Not listing references does not mean you will not get the probable interview. References do not get checked until you get an interview anyways, so try and not be so hard on yourself as there really is no loss yet. On any resume you want to be descriptive as much as you can however there is a limit as to how much you should include as including every detail leaves no room for discussion for an interview. So just spruce up your resume and include a line that says references available upon request. Then you go to an interview, naturally you will take with you another copy of the same resume you issued prior to the interview, at which time you have a separate sheet that lists your references on the separate sheet. This coming from a person who has hired hundreds in my past, ME!

They are only important if you are considered. You get a resume to long and the reader looses interest. A cover letter and resume...that's it. At the end of the cover letter just say something like "Personal and professional references available upon request". That way they reader knows you have them, but doesn't have to "waste his time" looking at them if he doesn't want to hire you or if he does, he will tell you to bring the to the interview. The problem today is that there are so many older qualified people for jobs these days, yet those that are doing the hiring are younger and not as qualified and they don't want to hire someone smarter or more qualified than they are..as they fear for their own job. So don't get surprised if you are qualified and don't hear anything.

The manager didn't ask me anything. She just told me that I'm in and that I should report on Monday. I'll just bring another print out of my resume with me, this time with references. What else do I need to bring? :)

Hi CrimsonRain Different people have different yardsticks of measuring your capabilities when it comes to jobs. Some prefer to meet you in person and ask you thereby they judge what you are capable of and things like these. Some others, rely on references just to ascertain what kind of a person or professional you are. In my opinion, references should be provided on the resume and there is a specific selections process - you should give at least 3 references The first one should be a senior at work under whom you were employer/working The second one should be a colleague at work The third one can be a personal relation or if you dont want to have a personal reference, you can provide any one of the above two. Provide the contact numbers, the relations that you had with them and also their contact address.

I consider references are important. Otherwise we can just fill in the form that we had this experience, that experience in this jobs and that jobs in order to impress the future employer. And these employers just need to know if you are telling the truth or lying. So having to provide a references is just a way telling that we are not lying about our experiences. They won't exactly called those people we put under our references but at least they know. And when we don't have or don't put any references in our application form, then that means no working experiences at all, means less possibility of getting considered for the job you applied, because just imagine how many more people are actually applying for the same job you applied, and they all probably have a references as proof that they do have experiences. They surely gonna be considered first for the interview. Happy mylotting and have a nice day

References are very important. That's because people trust people who have a lot of references that give good feedback about them. Esspecially since you don't have a lot of actual job experience yet, so it's even more important for you to have good references.

It actually depends on the company that you are applying, some doesn't even contact those people listed in your references. This is what I do, in the Character References Section, I put "available upon request". I do this due to privacy reasons. I don't want to give out contact numbers of those people immediately because there are times that not only the Human Resource officer or your Boss will be able to look into it. I don't want receive messages from those people that I listed there that there are anonymous people who has been bothering them. And through this, it would be easy to inform those people that they might receive a phone call from that company.

Yes your dad is right although I am sure he could have said it in a less angry tone of voice.. more often then not references are provided by previous employers that you may have worked for to let the CVS pharmacy employer know what kind of a worker you were i.e did you ever miss a day of work, did you get along with customers and other employees, did you play sick too often etc... all of this is used to get a clear idea of what kind of employee you will be to the business a word to the wise whenever you submit applications to future employers always include at least 3 references it will give you an edge on getting a job

are reference really important in a resume? and the answer is yes, specially if you are a fresh graduate. reference is very important to an interviewer or manager to decide if you have the right attitude or the right skills to do the job. the manager don't know who you are, so they are going to contact your reference and ask something about you. So make sure you've included some credible person in your reference with their contact numbers.about three persons is enough for reference. I've always include credible reference in my resumes like the dean of our school and some of my professors, and it work every time. just make sure you talk to that person before placing him as your reference.

Hi, Sorry to hear that your dad scolded you because of the "references" in your resume. He should not scold you just because of this issue, he can say nicely to you and advise you what is the best way to get your resume done. Cool down and don't be sad. You can rectify your resume by putting some close friends or relatives as your references. The function of putting references is because some company may actually want to know more about you before they decide to employ you as their staff. If you do work before, you can state your ex-employer or colleagues as your references as they may know your working attitude better. Good luck in your job hunting!

I believe that references are important in a job resume. Sometimes your reference may give you the push you need to get the job. Employers need to know what kind of people they are hiring.

I think references are important to mention in any resume because sometimes it plays their role and sometimes when we mentions any persons name in our resume and when we goes for an interview in any company then sometimes companies HR or head person may know the person personally and it will be effected on us.

Character references are very important, I do put some of my friends or my superior in my previous jobs. References will help you to get the job. They will ask your references about you, in this case they will know if you give them the correct informations that they got from your resume.

hi crimson. well, references are quite important, because usually the manager will call the person in your references and it will increase the chance you'll be accpeted. Of course, if you don't have any job experience before, not putting down the references is okay.

i think they are important ... they basically in a way authenticate you ... you can write several things in your resume and sometimes it gets hard to check every point ... if you got a reference from a person who has mentored you or overlooked work and provides you with a reference its like a clean chit given to you and your abilities

Yes sir, its important, as an employer character reference is important, its a way to verify if a person is saying is right. Most of them are doing a background check on the person resume like education, grades, work experience. SO be sure that the character reference that you write in your resume can help you build your resume up.
