Is actionscript 2.0 obsolete?

I have a basic foundation in actionscript 2.0 that I acquired 2 years ago. I want to come back to actionscript to make a game similar to "Super Mario". Now, I've heard about actionscript 3.0... Is it an updates for actionscript 2.0 or is it different from 2.0?
