What are some of the forces that keep us from helping strangers?

The media praises good Samaritans, and many civic groups award medals to humanitarians. However, there are forces in contemporary life that threaten this tradition of kindness to and help for strangers. What are some of these forces? Why do you think that we should help or not strangers that are in need/

My heart tells me when to help someone in need!!! I make it a rule to take care of me first & if I see someone else that needs help, I give them what I can. This year alone I have taken in 2 friends who lost their jobs & their homes. I to one McDonald's where people stand outside begging for money for food. Instead of handing them money, I go inside & buy them a combo meal & give them the food. I have had some people on the street approach me asking for money. Sometimes I will because they sound sincere. Sometimes I don't because I feel they're lying. I handle every situation differently depending on what my heart tells me to do!!!!
