How what we read affects our writing.

I have been writing since I was three. My favorite authors include V.C. Andrews, Stephen King and John Grisham. I know, kinda typical. But really, the writings of the original V.C. Andrews before she died; that is, My Sweet Audrina, Flowers in the Attic and most of the Heaven series is the most poetic and wonderful writing I have ever read. Stephen King has the very best imagination, tho he tends to sometimes drone on, such as in Duma Key. Grisham is a very good writer, and A Painted House is one of my faves, he gets away from law for a bit and lets you experience a seven year old in early 20th century, picking cotton. Yay for him. I think your writing style, and hope of how you want to write, is taken from what you read and love. I can only dream of being a successful author someday. Don't you?

Being influenced by an author's writing style is okay when you're just starting to write and are learning how to write a novel. But as you mature, you need to find and develop your own style. You also need to read authors with a wide variety of styles or you risk sounding like a copycat. I don't think I've ever been influenced by anyone's style, but maybe that's because I've read hundreds and hundres of novels by many different authors from different centuries and cultures.

I have always loved to write whether is it short stories or poems, but when my son was born it got to where I didn't have time to write and now I am getting back into it. I love the romance stories like the historical romance and I love Kathleen Woodiwiss books they make you feel like you are right in the story with all the characters. The problem I have trying to be a writer is bringing the characters to life and giving then a voice. I would love to write professionally one day and have someone buy my book.
