im not familiar with her, since french music and culture is way far from us. but she seems to be a really good performer the ya you describe her.

I wouldn't call Lady Gaga the creator of avant garde music actually. In my opinion she just brought it mainstream. There have been other performers who did what Gaga does (Gaga's style is more like burlesque and WTF in your face rather than artsy) she just managed to make it popular.

Mariah Carey has to be in the mix. Tons of talent and very popular all over the world in all forms of society.
Personally I love Gwen Stefani though. Wicked fun performances. Down to earth type of person from a humble start, she plays to the fans in a good way.
