How do you feel when you receive a generic or recycled gift?

I know it's really the thought that counts, but I want to find out how most of you feel whenever you receive a generic or recycled gift? I know that it's a challenging time now since were all experiencing the effects of the recession. But I really don't get how some people could give out recycled gifts. I appreciate gifts and all, but nothing says "you're not that important" more than receiving a box of thumbtacks or a shirt that says "Maximo's Construction Supplies". :p Well ok, it gives you a good chuckle, so I guess it's not really that bad. :p ...I'd rather get a meaningful text message from a friend than a gift that was obviously not meant for me. A personalized card would be really really nice too. How about you guys? Have you ever received generic/recycled gifts? How did you guys feel? :)

i think i won't mind receiving recycled gifts as long as i can find a use for it..well if someone gave you a box of thumbtacks, you can just consider it as a freebie and not a gift..

...that's actually a great way of putting it. Consider it a freebie. :) I'm sure no matter how random a gift may be you could find a use for it. :)

More often than not, I don't mind receiving recycled gift at all, really... As long as I find it useful, I'll use it as much as I can. If I think someone else has better use of it, I give it to them but I make sure that the giver does not find out, or he/she might be offended. Or I give it to charity.

You're right and those are great suggestions. :) It would be very rude if the giver found out that your gave away his/her gift. But yeah, if you have a friend who has better use of the gift you received, it would be better if you gave it to him/her. :)

That's actually the point. :) You have to put some thought into it. I personally believe that if you can't think of anything to give, a greeting would do --- a text message, an email, a card. Put a smile on someone's face to get him/her through the day. That's the best gift someone could give. That's from a givers point of view. As a receiver, of course you appreciate whatever gifts you get, because as you said it's the thought that truly counts. :) But in all honesty, I'm curious to find out how most of us feel when we receive those kind of gifts? :)

Well I usually receive crappy gifts from relatives. And I have received one that is the worst that I literally thrown it away when I first saw it.

To me it depends on who is giving me the gift. If its like from a passing acquaintance or someone I partially know, then I don't mind or care unless its like one of those gifts that you know they just want to get rid of so they wrapped it up and gave it to you. However, if its someone I am really close to, I would hope they would give me something meaningful even if its just a message or a card. I wouldn't be upset or angry if they gave me a generic gift, but it would touch me and make me happy if the gift came from the heart and was reflective of our relationship.

I agree. To be fair, most generic gifts are given by acquaintances, clients, etc. So it's forgivable. :) And I don't think we really get angry or disappointed when we do receive such gifts... I think most of us just laugh it off. :p But yeah, a card or a text or phone call from someone dear to you is more than enough. It's the best gift you could receive. :)
