Goodbye, Mbah Maridjan, God Loves You!

Mt. Merapi erupted and killed our respected-modest old man, Mbah Maridjan, who was in the previous eruption (2006), he, who's house's nearest to the erupting crater, rejected to go down and he did something that -with God's permission- stopped Merapi eruption. That's OK if you don't believe in such supernatural thing, but you can visit Indonesia to prove that such thing once really happened. Last Tuesday, Merapi erupted again. Still Mbah Maridjan refused to be rescued. He even made a joke of the eruption: "Look, the mount is coughing again. It's just coughing". And when his family asked him to go down, he simply said: "Whatever will happen, I'll be here, I'll never go down" That symbolizes integrity and loyalty. Then, God wills to call him when he was praying Maghrib. He was killed in the best position; sujud (bow from kneeling position till the forehead touches the floor in sholat ritual). Let us remember him as a strong and high-dedicated man. His modesty will remain forever. Goodbye Mbah Maridjan, we'll pray for you!

How did the Islamic authorities react to what Maridjan did? The idea of "guardians of nature" doesn't seem to fit in with what I've read about Islam, so were the beliefs of Maridjan's village/tribe(?) a kind of mix of Islam and folk beliefs? Also, was Maridjan famous in Indonesia for his job, or was he a respected figure only around the Mt. Merapi region?
