I have read very bad critics on The American starring George Clooney. They say it is boring, without any action or at least tension, its not a thriller but a fake art movie. The other day I have watched it and I understand why they said such critics. But I disagree with them. I liked the movie a lot. It cought the mood of the desperately lonely and empty man very well. Instead of a next James Bond we saw a more realistic picture of a sinner like assassin. Have you seen the movie? What do you think?

In my humble opinion it is a very good movie, beautiful italian landscapes, slow paced, pleasant moody flix.

I agree..I have read somewhere that the director is a photographer or something like that. And it was visible on the movie:)

I fully agree with you. The mood is certainly drab and dark. It shows your the angst and fears of the hit man. Even the pastoral priest could not assure him of his due ' heaven'. As you put it right, 'American' is one lonely man!

I didn't read the critics before the movie. Neither have I read it after the movie. I agree it is an art movie filmed in a nice setting, a place in Italy/Rome. I like the mood in the movie, the sets are beautiful with those maze-like alleys and walkways, stairs and buildings. The very 'italian' details such as those little pots of green plants that are twirly-whirly on the little outdoor table while the Pastor invited him for a drink. I am not sure if George Clooney played well for the lonely. He seemed more like a man with one of two interests. Not just about butterfly, he didn't seemed too interested to other than satisfy his basic needs. What I see in him is a basic man. He is even not so interested in money. Also not so interested in women. Perhaps he is just too cautious, that couldn't free him to enjoy the basics of his life time.
