Marriage license...piece of paper or something more?

Om so I guess there has a been a long going debate about the importance or meaning of getting married and obtaining a marriage license. I think a marriage license is just a piece of paper. It shouldn't change the way you act, or feel about your partner. I wouldn't even have thought about marriage but being as my husband is military it is a little different. The military doesn't recognize long term relationships, common law, or anything along those lines. So it is just better to have that piece of paper to get benefits. I think its quite ridiculous, but nothing I can do about it. I married my husband because he makes me happy, he knows what he wants out of life, he treats me like a queen, and I have grown so much as a person being with him. I learned exactly what I wanted out of life more so then I knew before, and I became a stronger and healthier person. What is your opinion on a marriage license? Do u think it is just a piece of paper saying u are married or do u think it signifies more than that? Everyone has their own opinion so no a**hole comments plz! Thank you :o)

A marriage license is just a piece of paper to some people. it is the proof of your bond and union together. It should mean more to us than to just be a piece of paper to file away.

When I say "just a piece of paper" I simply mean that it shouldn't define the relationship. The bond between two people should be of love, trust, loyalty, faithfulness, and happiness. Yes it is a contract between two people. But like i said it shouldnt define the relationship or get in the way u feel about ur partner.

Commitment is more important than a paper telling the whole world that you are married. I have to agree with you on that. You really don't need a piece of paper to make your marriage meaningful. What is important is you both love each other and are committed to one another.

it is better to be safe than sorry, it is better to be clear that you are the wife. have you heard about one of the miner at chile, the one who was there was not the wife but the other woman. if she has that piece of paper then the other woman knows where her place is. paper or not paper this is a security that needs to be proven in some instance in a couples life. specially if there are kids involve.

Marriage license pertains to legal matters. It's a form of security or proof that you are legally married. It is not just a piece of paper, because once you are legally married, you also have legal obligation to each other. Meaning, you cannot marry other person once you are legally married unless you filed for a divorce. Being legally married also means legitimacy to your children.

I know what a marriage license means and pertains to. I meant it is just a piece of paper in the relationship aspect. Yes a marriage license means a great deal legally, but doesn't define a relationship. I have met alot of people who put too much emphasis on the marriage license and making it a part of their relationship and it is a meaning of their love. I'm sorry but I don't see it that way. And all the people that I have that have put too much emphasis or shall I say emotion into just a marriage licnse have ended in divorce.

I think marriage license is more like warranty card for a husband and a wife for ongoing their household. This license is a manifestation of husband's and wife's promise to do his obligation as a husband and a wife. Working for living cost, raising children etc. When there is a divorce, this license will help both of them to get their right including fair sharing of wealth and children owner.

I don't mean marriage in itself. Just the paper that says u are married. A ceremony is just the celebration and not the actual commitment. I understand and appreciate everyone's opinions, but I said...to each his or her own.:o)

I agree with you that it is just a bit of paper but unfortunately in some circumstances some males think it is an ownership paper that gives them the right to do what they want to their wife. I was in such a marriage and it was hell. I have always thought they if two people were that committed to each other that no bit of paper would make a difference and why not have a committment ceremony instead of jumping through government and religious hoops for another license. They seem to want to make us have a license for everything these days, when will it end. I think that maybe centuries ago they had a marriage ceremony and then their names were recorded in a church registrar as being married, I think that sounds better than having to get a marriage license.

Marriage license is necessary before getting married. In the Philippines, you have to secure a marriage license from the city or provincial office. The marriage contract is the piece of paper wherein contracting parties (husband and wife) signs and countersigned by the witnesses. Marriage is a binding contract of the individuals who have understood the law pertaining to it. It is the security of women as what others wanted to put it that way. Practically speaking, indeed it is. As for your situation, it is a must that you marry your husband not only to protect your rights but also the rights of your children. ^_^

I do respect the impotant of marriage license. It is not a paper that gives you two the legal right, but the clear proof of your love and warn you the responsibility which you should take as one's wife or husband.

Ahh, I think it is not just a piece of paper, when ever you are promoted from one class to another or have some promotion in your office you get a letter and you keep that letter or degree or certificate safe and if you promoted or high position or higher marks then you want to show it to every one, on the basis of that degree you get good job and promotions etc, so I think marriage certificate is also like that, it give you authority on each other, it is just like a promotion letter in your life, I think being married and have good life is success, in asian or arab countries when ever you are caught with a girl then it is marriage certificate which release you, if you dont believe then ask from some one who is being caught and punished, this is really a safety, for you, your partner and your family, you can tell to any one that you are legally wife or husband of this person, Love should be there but there is some proof and that proof is in the form of marriage certificate which is accepted in all civilized societies other wise animals are also there, does they need any certificate to have relation with each other, they also live together, have their families, but it is civilized people to have some sort of certificate....:) Have a good time with your family and loved one....:)

actually for me it's just a piece of paper a contract rather.. a contract that has no expiration of any sort.. anyway, you are right on the spot there that it shouldn't change the way you act.. but sometimes, that piece of paper is necessary for the children's future,, for documentation.. it's just for formality, and you said it already it shouldn't change how you act.. so might as well get one.. just for filing.. it wouldn't change anything after all..
