Rise in University fees in UK

November 3, 2010 3:19pm CST
The increase in tuition fees have been all over the news recently and since I'm probably going to university in just a couple years time, I have been following it intently. They say that some universities can charge up to £9000, almost treble the amount at the moment! I think that even though UK is in a pretty tight situation with all the recession and debt and stuff, its still disgraceful. This will now mean that most of the students that go to university are not going to be the ones who have most potential but the ones who can afford it and are in a very good economic situation. It is like we are reverting back to a century ago where we had the class system. I just don't understand why they can't cut on other sectors like those nuclear tridents that we spend billions of pounds to maintain. Anyway else have views on the current situation?

Oh no, yeah schools are free in the UK, well unless you want your children to go to a private school... But I'm talking about Universities fees rising, they used to cost £3000 and something a year but they are set to double and even treble in some universities. The government are saying they don't want to put people off from going to university but it's kind of putting me off 'cos I'm not sure I'd be able to afford it.

I do think it is a bit of a disgrace to be honest with you. The UK needs to bre investing iin the future generations with a view to keeping the most intellectual and educated individuals in the country rather than having them go abroad for education and work. I don't envy the situation that our young people are in today, when I was in higher education there was nothing like this going on. I agree that it is going to once again create a class divide with those that can afford it getting the better education, while the clever youngsters are left behind, and it is very unfair. My nephew is in his first year and grammar school to which he will probably be wanting to go on to university, but I have no idea how his parents are going to be able to fund it. I know he is only twelve years old right now, but what will the system be like when he gets to eighteen. It does worry me.

Yeah I'm currently in a Grammar school as well and many of my friends and classmates, like me, will probably not be able to afford such high tuition fees. I just don't understand how Nick Clegg could have let this happen seeing as one of his main policies were to cut university fees entirely and now less than a year later, the government are raising them... I do really hope the system will improve as well, for me, your nephew, and many others who are on the same boat.
