Chatting??? Confused about the entire concept, I do have a theory though.

I see the little icon typing away, but what exactly are we chatting about? The mourning news, the Tiger Woods interview by Mike and Mike in the mourning, last nights late night shows, i.e Conan, Letterman, etc. The best way I can make since of chatting on this site is to sort of think of it as the water cooler talk among people on the INTERNET.

small talk sometimes can bring big fortunes, lol. I guess it is through these small talks that people get to socialise and getting good at it. At times, it is to kill boredom. Take it easy, my friend :)
