We human cares a lot to other people, specially when we think there experiencing a worst scenario in life.. but do they really need our sympathy or empathy? or maybe they only need our deepest understanding and our strength so they can have the courage to stand up. As for me, i believe that we must show them strength to carry on and never show pity on them because it will make there life more miserable.

empathy makes us put ourselves in the shoes of others. this makes us try to understand them more, and hopefully, help or listen to them the best we can. i don't want to pity someone else, because as you said, that makes it worse. the person dosen't need to be pitied. i think what we have been through brings out the strength in us to be able to take a stand for the person and their situation.

my answer would be, people need both sympathy and empathy. although what they need more is empathy. however, providing people with empathy is not an easy task. it requires that you should full understood them and you're willing to be in their shoes. when this happened. you're ready to provide them the need they deserve.
