Time vs. Money

At my work lots of departments have to take the Holidays off if they like to or not. I'm in Housekeeping so of cause they need me to work. There are 2 Housekeepers and since it is slower on the Holiday we're giving the choice to stay home. This year I'm gonna work on the Holidays cause it's time and a half pay and times are tough right now. My Friend decided to take Thanksgiving of this year saying that "Family is more important than money and work"...very true if you have lots of money and can afford to take off. I look at it this way...I'm helping my Family by making extra money, I get free food at work and when I get home the Turkey be ready to eat and I didn't have to slave over the hot stove. Do you have to work on your Holidays or do you have a choice?

I always worked the holiday because I was either working in hospitality or retail. I ususally didn't have the choice, but if given a choice I would have worked. Like you said the money would help my family and no slaving over a hot stove!

I don't have to work on the holidays where I work. Thank goodness we get paid holidays too. Holidays would be tight if I had to go with out them being paid. I would be volunteering to work. I guess a person could save back money to be off though.

i used to work on every holiday seasons as well in the past because my job required me to... but recently, i just been laid off work after 6 years of serving in the company... so this year for the first time after 6 years, i will be able to spend my holidays with my family... for me, family is still more important than money... take care and have a nice day...

I may say, for a real spirited worker, everyday is a working day and also every day is a holiday. Making the work-choice as per one's interest and working with dedication makes a person free from the urge of the necessity of a holiday! Of course, taking a vacation for touring purposes needs planned holidays from work! Though time is money, at the same words, time is life, time is leisure and pleasure with family etc. So, my choice is to develop my time as my needs of leisures!! Thanks and have a better choice for 'Time is Recreation'!!

I'd say sure you should be working but when there's a family event always be there for them even if it means slaving over a hot stove. You can have all the money in the world but you won't have those memorable moments to recall that you had with your family nor will they have a very fond memory of you, so don't spend your holidays working spend it with the family!

My work schedule varies with what sales are on and what my availability is. However, this year hubby is on the end of the work week where Thanksgiving is. I'd like him to have the day off but I'd also like him to work part of the day as we loose money with him home. He gets holiday pay for 8 hours, HOWEVER... they normally work 12 hr shifts which means we'd be loosing 4 hrs of pay Though upon occasion they've had him work partial days on a holiday and then send him home wich would be ok with me as the holiday is over time. I get a few hrs holiday pay w/o working the holiday but I don't make nearly what he does. But like you we need to pay the bills and a holiday can be observed in your household on another day if need be. As bill collectors could care less if you worked enough hours to pay your bills & still eat or not.

Oh yeah...Bill collectors, I had my share of them, but right now I'm Ok. I will be off on Friday so it's Ok for me to work Thursday and make a little extra money, plus when I get home dinner will be ready.

Hi, I do not work yet and I'm sad of your situation. I hope you get more pay since you already have a family. In my part, we do have the money to take day off anytime we want and go vacations during holiday and that's how my family spends time. My dad doesn't spend much on us during breakfast because he's with his richer friends eating a meal on a three star hotel. That's how I hate him, we don't enjoy the same privileges as him.

it is so hard to manage the time and because of the time we want to earn money. money is important now and also the time was important. but if you have time you cant earn money. so you can manage the money under your time. and of course just also spend time with the others like your family and your self not do a work hardly.

It's difficult to choose at times, everybody has to do what they feel is right at the time.

Hi missybear My dear, you are looking at this situation in the right way because the cost of living has gone up, up, and up and your family needs food, shelter, etc. Plus, you don't have to cook like the rest of us and you get free food. It doesn't get any better than that! When I was working, I always worked the holidays, they were limited on help because everyone wanted the day off. I didn't mind! Take care Snow

Same here, if my co-worker wants it off then that's good for me cause I can work and get a little extra pay. She has kids and grand kids so it's more important for her to be off, plus she can afford it. Happy Holidays to you

I am still a student, so I don't work, but it would be terrible for me to work on holidays. But when you don't have a choice, you don't have a choice, and have to do what is required from you. Of course it would be better to be at home with your beloved ones, but there is a question: what is better? to be at home at holidays and being sacked, or not being home at holidays and having a stable income which provide the family all they need during the whole year.

I am working on my holidays, even tomorrow I have to work but when it comes to a occassion or a festival, I prefer to stay home and spend time with my family because, money is not everything in life. Isnt it. Its just a part of life.

Holidays are given off to the whole staff at were i work but the owners will probably work and enjoy it as they work probably around 80 hours a week. I try to at least get in more than 30 hours in a week as i come home and work on the computer doing things like this of course. I do not have the choice to work or not but i probably would go in for about 4 hours if i was aloowed because you get paid more and time in half so working only a half day would be good because i would get paid for the while day. Well i hope you have a good time working by yourself and enjoying your day working on Thanksgiving. Have a great day mylotting.

For me, i don't have a choice. There's a high possibility that i'll be working on christmas and new year cuz that's the nature of my work. I'll just look at it as helping others communicate. I can always catch up with family and friends when i take my day off.

When I worked in the hotel businees and retail business I always worked the holidays. Most of the time I didn't have the choice but if I did, I would have probably worked anyway. Like you said, the extra money helps the family and no slaving over the stove!
