Protecting the life-VS-a greater good?

If one day you're faced with two options, namely: 1. "Protect the life which included a crime" or 2. "Must destroy life for the good of a larger (the Greater Good)", Which would you choose? At this time we are able to maintain both of the above without having to sacrifice the other. But if one day the state makes these two things contradict each other (which one can not exist with the presence of others) and you are forced to choose, which one would you choose? Or do you argue that "the protection of life is one form of a greater good as well"? And do you think, which is more valuable in both areas are to be protected? "Life" or "Greater Good"? Don't forget the reason,
