Coconut is the most useful plant here in the Philippines, I don't know with some other countries, from the roots to the leaves, everything found in the coconut plant was used by our people here. Coconut leaves can be used as broom sticks, house decors and covers on some palatable snacks. The outer layer of coconut or what is called mesocarps are used to clean the floors, a planting material for ornaments, rope or textiles. The meat can be eaten raw, jam or as ingredients to numerous menus and The tree itself are used in building houses, makeshift bridges, boats etc. Since I was small I was wondering why coconut is called coconut when in fact it doesn't have a nut inside and it grows higher like a tree. Is coconut really a nut?

Welcome to mylot Lol it is certainly a nut, it has a outer cover as in all fruits that has a nut inside. It is the only tree that can give us, food, shelter and clothe, one can build a hut using the trunk and leaves, mats to sleep from leaves, even clothes can be made from fibre on the outer sheth, one can drink the water and eat the white stuff, what more is needed lol Thank you so much for this discussion. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . God bless you. Welcome always.

lol..well, that is definitely an interesting question. I have really thought about it before. I think the coconut is the actual nut as a whole. I know coconut oil is one of the healthiest foods/oil we can eat and has so many health benefits. There sure are a lot of uses to the coconut!

It is a nut. If it was a fruit then it would not be the seed that you were eating, correct?
