Higher-order thinking and critical thinking

I've been thinking about what one of my professors said and now I'm curious about higher-order thinking and critical thinking. I'm curious as to why it's such an important concept in our education. What do you guys think? Why are higher-order thinking and critical thinking important concepts in the discipline of language arts and reading? How do these areas support fluency and comprehension in emerging readers?

it is important to teach students how to think, not just let them figure out the right answer. I always gave open ended questions even in math. Sometimes i simply wanted them to explain or justify their answer. this helps them think and also helps with communication skills.
