Tips for keeping kitten out of the Christmas Tree!

December 20, 2010 10:19am CST
Our 6 foot Christmas tree has been completely ruined by our crazy, inquisitive kitten who is using it as a climbing frame. A friend suggested covering tree stalks in lemon juice as a deterrant but that sounds incrediblly messy! Does anyone else suffer with the same problem and do you know of any solutions?!

I seen someone already used my idea. My kitty wanted to stay on the kitchen table, my husband hated this idea and was to the verge of making us get rid of the cat. But we got a water bottle and sprayed her whenever she would get on the table. Now she knows getting on the table means getting sprayed so she doesn't get on it. It's been probably 2 or 3 months since I've seen her on the table. I don't think she even thinks about it now....

Years ago when I was fixing up a Christmas tree each holiday season, I had a cat and a dog. The trees were each one a veritable work of art. So the cat would climb on the branches and play with the bulbs and use the trunk as a scratching post and the dog thought I'd fixed up his new indoor pee pole. Finally I gave up and just stopped putting up the trees. All is quiet and peaceful now during holiday season.

Alot of cats do not like the smell of citrus. Try using a citrus spray. Hope that helps any. It's kept my cats off the counter =D

If you are home, then its up to you to teach kitty its proper places to play. But cats are natural climbers and this will happen. if you have gotten a box that you carry kitty to the dr office, and you work, you may want to put kitty in the crate while you are gone during the day as this will protect your tree and even kitty from getting hurt. Or if there is another room in the house such as even a bathroom, you can place kitty in that room for while you are gone to work or school and add his litter box, a blanket for him to sleep on and a couple of his favorite toys. Good luck its always fun to get through this with a new kitty and Christmas in the same word.
