Hi, I think I can help you a little. I recently read in a book that it's true, the Bibble doesn't mention purgatory at all. Conseption purgatory comes from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, and from that work comes the idea that's where people's souls who hadn't been 'good' suffer. Hope you found this little tidbit helpful.

Oh lol I forgot to mention it. Dante's Inferno was written in Middle Ages and that happened to be time when Church had major political and religious power in Europe. The Church wanted more power and I guess it liked the idea of using Dante's Inferno theme to scare people into being good Christians. Sort of like the Spanish Inquisition, if people aren't 'good' by their free will, you can always force them to be and I'm sorry to say but people in Middle Ages truly were so uneducated to believe in what the Church said, because Church was the only thing then that could teach the poorer layers of populace. Why people still believe (at least people brought up with Christian faith) is still the same, they are thought that way, only now 'purgatory' is displaced with 'hell'. (People ask before they die, "Will I go to hell?"). Of course the importance of the Catholic Church has lessened, but it still holds a roll in people's lives so the consept of purgatory lives on too.
