Most nurses are overworked and yet underpaid.

The sad truth specially here in my country most nurses are working for 12 hours shift and receiving low compensation without overtime pay. Nurses are the one who handle patient, who give immediate care before being held by the physician. They are the one who give first aid and assess patient’s condition before the doctor comes in. How calm this kind of noble job doesn’t deserve a right compensation. Here in my place most nurses are not well compensated. The worst thing is some of them don’t even receive compensation at all. That’s the sad truth about the government is this, how calm they don’t prioritize the benefits of health sector..

Maybe there are too many nurses. Just like money, when there is too much it results in inflation, money becomes less of it's worth. Having too many nurses maybe the cause. I'm just speculating.

you got that right...there's just too many nurses (I'm one of them) and too little health facilities. It's like the law of supply and demand... you don't hire 100 nurses and pay each $6000 a month and placed them in a 75 bed capacity hospital right?

yes you could both be correct. But nurses should still be paid with it's over time pay right? We are still entitled to receive it no matter how many nurses are. If there are so many of us nurses, how come we still have to work over time or 12hours? Medical organizations should hire nurses needed for 3 shifts. We all know how hard it is to work in a hospital.

Actually a hospital wouldn't hire so much nurses and pay them if they can get nurses for free from colleges, correct?

That's really a big problem. I worked in a call center before and I have a lot of team members that are registered nurses. They said they don't want to continue their profession anymore because of the " overwork, underpaid" condition. They said that it is better to stay in the call center industry than in the hospitals because compensation are better. Even the working hours are shorter. You have to work only for 8 hours and any excess of it is considered overtime. I think they chose to become practical than pursuing their careers as nurses and never be paid the right amount for the works that they are doing.

Yes I agree with, we can't blame them if they are no longer interested to pursue their chosen career, if that's the only thing they could get. They couldn't even pay for their health expenses when they get sick.

Not only are we overworked and underpaid, but we are also neglected by our government. That is why most of us would prefer to go to other countries and serve foreign people than serving our own country men because we are not treated well in our own country. Some of us don't even have jobs because, as mentioned above, there are too many of us already. Over supply of nurses in the Philippines. Why does our government don't do something with us nurses? Why can't they set a salary per year for us so we won't be underpaid? And for overtime work, they should also be adding additional income for us with that service. I know it's better to provide service to people in need for free but it's really hard to live without being paid these days. Some of the nurses even haven't experienced working as a nurse so what they do is pay hospitals for them to be able to become a nurse trainee and experienced the life of a real nurse.

I definitely agree with you.. It's not the government itself. There are a lot of private health care institutions who would even exploit the nursing service. From graduating in college and passing the National Licensure Exam, most newbie nurses would even land as volunteers paying out to some private or government owned hospitals so they can have practice their profession and earn more experience. If only a nurse's salary is high, there is no need to go abroad and earn bigger money outside.. Moreover, I believe that there is a lot of corruption within the government especially the health sector.

lady-di1210, yes there are a lot of reasons why nurses are exploited and that was very unfair.

Lighten up guys. may be behind it all there must be something that makes it had to be like that. because it is not in your country just like that and in other countries also must go through that.

You hit on a truth here, mayrah. My sister is a triple-certificated nurse, but has recently resigned from a city hospital for the very reasons you stated. I asked her what she will do now, as all the hospitals in this country (Australia) are virtually the same. She answered me by immediately phoning an agency that supplies nurses direct to sick people at home. Well, her salary is higher, and sometimes it's just a case of sitting talking to the patient most of the time - a far cry from the hassle of working for a hospital. Most of the patients are rather wealthy and will pay well for the nursing service.
