Lack of ideas is definitely the main thing that brings me WAY down as a writer . It's always incredibly hard for me to find a topic to write about. It's my dream to write a novel, but as long as my creative mind keeps this up, that's probably never going to happen. It maddens me that I can just sit, staring at a paper for hours and never get ideas. All the resources I have used to get me inspiration say that I should just wait and the perfect idea will come to me. I can tell you this, waiting years and years didn't get me anywhere! And I can't write about something that has happened to me, either. Is it my fault that I haven't had a miserable or eventful childhood? I can't help it if nothing so interesting occurred in my past! There's one more thing I CAN'T write about . Am I the only one who continually has these blocks for ideas? Does anyone else have problems finding a good thing to write about? Is there possibly any advice you could give me? Thank you guys SO much for listening to me raving and ranting about my troubles and Happy New Year to everyone!! Have a great year! Maybe this year will bring us all immense luck in our own mysterious writing paths!

i think ideas can come naturally and a great way to take all of it is to carry a little notebook, it's really saving me in the part i'm in my book right now

I have been looking to write a novel for years and have had many great ideas just to lose interest. I guess I have not found an idea that was good enough to even hold my interest. I am glad that someone else out there has trouble finding something good to write about. I hope you had a great new years!

The best novels have nothing to do with the authors' childhoods. Get that myth out of your head. Think of it this way -- nothing in, nothing out. Are you doing a lot of reading, particularly of novels, if that's what you want to write? Do you pay attention to what's going on around you in the world, including what people say? If not, then all I can say is that you're not doing anything to move toward being a writer. And, I know it sounds harsh, but you may have to accept the idea that maybe you're just not cut out to be a writer. Not everybody is, no matter how much they may want it. Most people who write are usually full of ideas. If you're an adult and haven't been able to think of anything to write about, maybe it's because you have a talent in some other area that you should be developing. Why spend your time looking at a blank sheet of paper? You pick up the paper when you have something to put on it. Good luck.

I'm not sure where you heard that you should wait for ideas... The most successful novelists do not say that. To get ideas you must stop staring at paper, get out, and ask questions! Ride the bus. Look at people. Find someome a little different, a little odd. Ask yourself why they are clutching that blue umbrella so tightly, even though the forecast did not call for rain. Who are they talking to on that cell phone? Is it really a cellphone earpiece, or is the person schizophrenic and they wear an earpiece so people think they are talking on the phone when really they are talking to their voices? Is that person on the way to kill him/herself, or are they on the way to a party? To divorce proceedings? Make up stories about the things you see. You need to train yourself to see things differently.

ideas do not wait, but must be hunted. To hunt for ideas, look for a different atmosphere from the condition that makes you difficult to find ideas. If you already are in different conditions, implanted brain to think about something new, and maintain your state of mind to be always ready to accept the arrival of new ideas.
