For personal writing activities, I would suggest trying to write about the random things around you - people, environment, food, insects, air, etc. Just say random things about them - what are they, what are their meanings. Blogging or just writing everything in a notebook would be both great. For a book, create a prologue in your mind and start from there. Write down the already filtered ideas down, then edit later. You can also base the story (in your case, a college student)on a real-life individual - someone you know or someone who has an ordinary yet interesting life.

I have a book about how to become a writer too and this book says to write first thing when you wake up. (Don't have to of course). You can also give yourself writing appointments to do later on in the day and just write anything that pops in your head. Inspiration can come from this. Does not matter if what you write does not make sense I have done this quite a while and after a while the writing gets better. I have not done this for a while now so my writing may have gone down a bit. When you write when you wake up you can come up with interesting things, such as stuff you dreamt about or activities you need to do or want to do for the day. Something I need to try to do more of and would love to do more of. Other stuff you can do is write about personal experiences, stuff you learnt, things you see, people you know, places you've been to or you can write about knowledge that you know about(i.e. how to.. stuff). There have been times I have a notebook with me and I've written anything that pops in my head while on train, at the station, tram or any public transport or stop. You can visit places like a park, cafe, pub, shopping mall or go somewhere different to a place you've never been before and write there and write about anything that pops in head or write about what you see, what you can hear, what you can smell, feel, taste, etc. The book I have is called Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande. It was recommended to me when I did a beginners writing class in January - June 2010. Another book is Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg and this looked really good as well. This was also recommended by my tutor and I have not bought it yet just read the library's one. It was really good too.

Keep practicing, as practice makes perfect (I wish I'd manage to practice more, but I'm lazy). Books and tutorials can be a useful tool. However, if I were you, I'd take everything I read in those things with a grain of salt, and instead try to develop my own voice. Rules are meant to be broken, and all good writers do that. Good luck and happy new year!

Hey I just discovered, not too long ago, what I think is a great website for fiction writing. You can sign up for a free writing course. They send you little 10 minute writing prompts to your email. Maybe you will like it. I know I sure did. Here is the link: http://www.creative-writing-now.com/creative-writing-prompts.html Honestly, I think that writing prompts are a very useful tool because the hardest thing about writing is getting started.

You might also try blogging. There are many free services and the discipline to do it every day is really good. Plus when people read it and leave comments then that gives you even more real life practice at writing!

If I were you I will start off by reading a lot. When you read a lot you not only expand your vocabulary, you'll be expose to other writing styles. You can also take a writing class to learn about proper punctuation, sentences structure, and things like that.
