How do I get traffic to my website for free

Hey all, I'd like to thank everyone for their wonderful and helpful suggestions for creating a free blog. I am so touched with how everyone came together for me and each other. YOU ARE ALL AWSOME!!!
My next hurdle, as you all probable guessed, is generating traffic unfortunately finances are pretty non existant and I would really love some effective but free ways to bring traffic to my blog site. I have already started with the free classified ads, but I could use some more good ideas about traffic generation techniques for the beginner. Again any information will be appreciated and I thank you for all in advance for your wonderful responses.

Do blog hops. I just did a post about how we have gotten over 1,500 readers on our blog in under 6 months, check it out and let me know if you need anymore info.

Firstly, I congratulate to your blog, it is a very good start. I can recommend free traffic exchanges for generating instant traffic to it, although the quality of the traffic from these sites is pretty bad and it is hard to gain referral/sales this way. The best free way to bring traffic to your blog is through Search Engine Optimization, this is a long process, but if you do it right, you will receive quality, targeted traffic to your blog. Also, you can try to ping your blog for free, I don't really understand how it works, but this method generated a few hits to my blogs.
