MyLot should define the parameters of Poll type question.

One of the discussions I started was recently deleted for being a poll type question and I've appealed it but have yet to receive an answer from the admins. I do not think it is a poll type question. Perusing through myLot's ongoing discussions, I realized that I was no the only one facing this problem, see life's discussion: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2465875.aspx The link http://www.thefreedictionary.com/poll provides the definition of what a poll is. A discussion on the other hand is defined in this link http://www.thefreedictionary.com/discussion (I apologize that I am unable to cut and past at the moment.) MyLot is a discussion site and as such the strict application of the poll definition should not be implemented with impunity. Note that No. 6 of the poll definition states: A survey of the public or a sample of the public opinion to acquire information. Off the top of my head what comes to mind when we speak of polls are questions which give you limited answers and specific choices as they would limit the points of discussion. However, a question that asks someone what and how asking for an enumeration and some description should not be considered a poll type question for purposes of discussion as it leaves plenty of room for discussion. If definition number six is taken to the extreme then every single discussion in myLot should be deleted for taking a "a sample of the public opinion to acquire information." Every discussion is about the opinion of the members, originators are asking for information. To guide its members, myLot and its admins should define the parameters of what a poll type question is, as it applies to myLot discussions, for a better myLot community.

This could be helpful. It would certainly guide us so fewer discussions get deleted. For some reason, I was thinking poll-type questions as applied to mylot were questions that encourage very short answers that don't add much except dry information to a discussion. For example, asking "do you believe in god?" would be a poll because even though many answers would be longer since people are passionate about it, it encourages "yes" or "no" answers. But, a long question asking if members believed in god, and if they did, which one, or do they just have an idea in their heads of an intelligent being, and why do they believe this? would be a discussion starter. At least, that is the idea I had based on which of my discussions were deleted when I first joined!

It seems that what myLot considers a poll type question is really confusing even the veteran mylotters. It would be helpful for mylot to define the parameters of what a poll type question is. So members won't start discussions that fall within the prohibited parameters. A very extensive definition is not helpful and each and every discussion could fall in it. If the veterans are confused moreso the newbies right? And we all lose time answering questions that are going to be deleted in the end. I just hope the admins look into this. I guess thats everyone's idea of a good discussion. As long as the choices are not limited and there is no room for discussion. Well its just a thought after all.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. My discussion was about highway shields, and it got deleted because it was a poll-type question? What in the heck? I did not give out any specific limited choices on the question! It's so frustrating! Hopefully, MyLot would rectify the fiasco and stat.

Yeah I know how it feels to have a discussion deleted, specially one with the participation of many of mylotters. I'm getting more careful now. A suggestion has been to ask why and how in addition to your other questions. Don't worry about it though, everyone in mylot have had a discussion deleted. It doesn't get less frustrating, but its no big deal. Happy mylotting!

Grrr - I completely agree with you! I just had this happen to me too and it made me really, really mad. I just had a discussion deleted for the same reason and I also emailed admin because I found it extremely unfair. My question wasn't a 'poll' in any way, shape or form. It was a thoughtful discussion that actually meant something to me. It asked a question, asked why people would answer that way and it also asked for supporting information. And it was generating solid responses. To have it deleted as a 'poll' was just insulting. You know, you see so many garbage discussions on here and they seem to stick around indefinitely. In the grand scheme of Mylot the really solid posters are pretty few and far between. When people like you or I get real discussions deleted for what I consider to be no good reason it sours us on the entire Mylot experience. I wish Mylot would try a little harder to keep the good people around instead of insulting them. If they keep it up the site will be nothing but 'what do you like on your pizza' discussions. Here's my discussion, does that seem like a 'game or poll' to you? "If you were to give the year ahead a name or title what would it be?" Looking at your plans and resolutions for 2011 what would you say would be a fitting name for the year? Most of my resolutions and things I want to accomplish are really about things coming together and getting everything in our life firmly on track. I want to see things finished this year, not just started! Going by those things I would call my 2011 'Progress' because I want to see things really evolve and go somewhere this year. So what's your title for the year? Why did you choose it and what are some of the resolutions you based it on?

That does not seem like a poll to me. It looks like a legitimate discussion. There are several point that can be expounded upon by other mylot members and each reply could actually branch out into subsections. I agree that having a discussion deleted is really frustrating especially when you have spent time and effort not only to come up with it but to actually respond to each and every response you get. Not to mention the loss on the time and effort of those that took the time to participate in your discussion. Clarifying the parameters of poll/game type questions would prevent frustration on all mylot members. Especially people like you that post really good ones that stimulate an exchange of ideas. I believe that admins should reconsider and reinstate your discussion, if they do, let me know and I'd join you

I agree asliah, they have to clarify. I understand that they cannot expound on every deletion, but a simple statement like "for being a poll or game type question" I believe is not enough unless the parameters of a poll type question is clearly defined in the guidelines. It would certainly not hurt myLot and would really help the community as well.
