How Come It's Easier Putting the Christmas Tree Up Than Taking It Down?

This happens every year without fail. The tree goes up in double-quick time but when it comes to taking it down again in January..it seems to take ages! I did do something different this year, though. I decided to keep the little tree hangers ON the baubles, otherwise I'd still be there now lol. So, do you feel the same way? Do you think it's easier (therefore quicker) putting the tree up or is it quicker taking it down again?

It's easier putting up the tree (particularly this year, my nephew was here from New York City and helped me put it up). Besides the mental part (the Holidays are over), stuffing the four parts of the tree back in to plastic bags for storage is a pain. The rest isn't bad, but I feel "down" the entire time I'm taking the ornaments off. I've thought about keeping the tree up all year to solve the problem, but I haven't done so as yet... Maybe next year?

I didn't feel depressed this time round..I do normally. I got satisfaction from ramming the three parts of the tree into its box and it all fastening up quite nicely. Again, this doesn't normally happen. One year I sat on the box, nearly squashing the damn thing!

A couple of years ago, I bought the last 11-foot tree the store had and they'd lost the box... So every year, I get to try and put the pieces in big plastic bags. The plastic bags look like h*ll by the time I finish, but I store them like that anyway. To he*k with pretty storage... The last tree I had had a box. When I threw out the box/tree, it looked like it had been sat on once or twice, too.

Usually, when you are putting the tree up, its with help (whether from family, or a little liquid courage). After the festive season draws to a close we are all in a go slow, and more importantly, nobody wants to put the tree away, so it becomes a chore. As with anything, its much easier preparing for fun than it is cleaning up afterwards.

Well, in my case, I put the tree up and took it down again. It seems it's become my job..but I don't mind. It must be wonderful to have children helping out, getting all excited.

In our house, I am the children hehe. My sister took it upon herself to set up the tree when we were around, and now, I'm left to take it down, with all of her tiny tiny trinkets that she has...without breaking them

Well, at least you are sharing in the task, which is more than what happens in this household..it's all down to me.

i find the exact opposite. it takes forever to put up but only a few minutes to take it down and put it away for next year.

Usually it takes me a long time to put the tree up but this time round I was really in the mood and didn't really think about it too much. Up in about 45 minutes, down in about an hour and a half but I have decided to keep the tree hooks on the tree decorations this time, so it will be interesting to see if I'm any quicker next Christmas!

I think it's because the spirit of the holiday brings so much energy and fun, and that's usually the time you put up the tree, and after the holiday season, this energy is exhausted and all the fun ran out, things just go back to being normal and that is usually the time when you start putting down the tree.

That's very true. Apart from the weather (which was worse over Christmas rather than New Year) it's not been too bad and I made sure I took the tree down well after New Year's Day because I didn't feel too well lol.

nooo... definitely takes much much longer to take the tree and all the decorations down. i must confess i took mine down today, i was off sick from work(nothing serious, just a dodgy tum) so i spent all day, dismantling the tree and packing away all the tinsel, lights, ornaments etc., i am a christmas decoration freak, always buy something or more every year. so have many decs. i decided to have a sort out, and decided to get rid of one box of small cherubs which are supposed to light up in the dark. (not yet they havent and i have had them for years) and a pack of a string of gold beads with gold bows. so that didnt work either , trying to sort out. but every thing is neatly packed away and the boxes are all labelled too !! but it took soooo long. i didnt think of keeping the little tree hangers on the baubles, thats a really good idea, which i will try to keep in mind for next christmas. the tree seems to take longer to fold all the branches in, its one of those fibre optic trees which is beautiful to look at but hell on earth to dismantle. I would love a real one, but with cats and a dog, not a very good idea. i have an enduring memory of my late but very darling alsation cocking his leg up the real tree and a years worth of pine needles , and still finding them years later when i gave in and got a silver tree, followed by a very realistic canadian pine, but now the fibre optic rules the roost. by the way Happy New Year!!

Decoration freak eh? Good for you! My lights are supposed to flicker on and off when I press a button..but of course they don't..just stay on permanently. It's a fake pine tree in 3 parts and is a bugger to get in its box, but I had loads of patience with it this year..for once! My baubles, etc, are (mostly) in plastic, clear boxes in another huge, plastic box, which is what they all came in. I keep meaning to get some more as they are all gold in colour and I'm a bit fed up of them. However, against the tinsel and lights they look grand..and there is a mixture of decorations, some are stars, some are baubles (big and small) plus the real cones with gold gliter on them. Haha! I remember real trees when I was little. The smell of the pine needles was something else and we didn't have central heating then so the tree didn't snuff it until at least New Year lol. I would love a real one but we're stuck with the fake one and that's that. Happy New Year to you too!

Ya, although I have not yet put the tree down LOL guess it's psychological, expecting Christmas brings so much excitement so we really do not mind much while taking it down is saddenig in a way to think all the fun is over. I would also like to assume that taking it down involves more care in preserving items to be reused next year and seeing to it they are well sorted out, whereas putting it up would only involve randomly picking pieces saved from last year and adding new ones we just bought, good luck to you guys

Good luck to you too! I was actually really organised this time round. I seemed to have a 6th sense as to what to do and how to do it lol. I was still organised when I took the tree down but it took longer and I don't really know why. More time on my hands perhaps? When I put the tree up is was whilst my husband was out playing billiards..so I knew it had to be quick in order to surprise him. Taking it down..well, I could just take my time with it..and did too!!

I find the opposite to be true--it's much easier taking the tree down than putting it up. Maybe it's just me but I hate putting up and decorating a Christmas tree. If I had my way I probably wouldn't even have a tree up at Christmas but I still live with my parents at the moment. When I move out I probably won't have one myself.

I do agree that it can be rather time-consuming putting a tree up if you don't like doing it. I have got bored of the decorations but once on the tree I always think the same thing, "they're not so bad after all..will do another year!"

I usually feel the same way but this year we didn't put up a tree. It's easier that way when it's just 2 people at home and you celebrate elsewhere. Plus its less hassle that you don't need. But I'm hoping next year we will have a tree, its not christmas without one.

Mum didn't have the tree in the front room this time (just one in the back) and she said it did look a bit depressing as one room looked Christmassy and the other one didn't. She does need a new tree though so I shall remind her to buy one well in advance for next time. As for me, I much prefer my tree up to not having it up, even though it can't be seen from the outside (it's in the corner) but that aside, it's designed to cheer me and hubby up, not total strangers lol.

I do think it's easier to put it up! It seems like it takes forever to take it down and although everyone wants to help putting it up..well..there is not alot of help around my house in taking it down.

I plan on taking it down tomorrow and I tell you I'm dreading it. I think like you its easier to put up then take down. I would love to just keep it like it is put an extra large garbage bag over it and store it somewhere but where I have no idea. My significant other is in the middle of building a concrete tool room I wonder if I could leave it up till its done and then I could store it there with the bag over it. That would be so great!

I don't know about that one, but I want to know why the very same decorations and tree that you took out of the box a few weeks earlier, now do not fit into the box in the new year when you try to pack it all away? Every year we face this dilemma so less and less goes into the box each year!

It is a bit like a new tent. You can never get them back into the original bag that they came in unless you leave the poles out!

Hi Janey..Like you new avatar by the way..Anyway, There is no question that taking the tree down is WAY MORE of a chore than putting it up. Maybe that is why mine is still up and looking at my schedule, will stay up for awhile! Maybe I can beat my all time record of March 1 a few years ago. Isn't that awful? I so love the tree and how pretty it makes the house look. It's such a warm inviting feeling and then you take everything down (and all the other stuff is even harder, the trinkets, candles, window decor, twinkle lights here and there etc) and everything is so bare and unappealing. Each year I go through a total redecorating crisis with thoughts like, "These window treatments have to go and "Man, I need new furniture" and "I can't live another day with these throw rugs!" etc. etc. and then after a week or so, the bareness becomes the "norm" again and the loan applications for all new stuff go to the trash. Yes, I love Christmas and all the splendor or the decorations and I figure as long as people are still saying Happy New Year, it's still the holiday season with no need to remove all traces of same..But when the last "Happy New Year" has been uttered, and the dusty boxes that have been home to the decorations for about 10 years now are once again pulled back in the house for the repacking, I yearn for a reason (and I've come up with some doozies) to keep the tree up all year long,,,selling it to everybody else is the problem!

p.s. Oh Yeah,,not to rain on your parade but I've tried the keeping the hook on the ornament thing and when the next year rolls around, 99% of them lie at the bottom of the box, just waiting to stab you! Hope your luck is better than mine!

Of course. Because when putting up the christmas tree, we still full with christmas spirit and excited with the whole idea of christmas day, party, presents, and all...But afterwards, we don't feel excited anymore, the moments already passed. So it's like cleaning the house after a party. Exhausting..

I know what you mean. All the cleaning, etc, can take a back seat during the party season. Christmas was a good excuse to ignore all that and just have some fun!

Hello Janey, i think it's easier for us to put the Christmas tree faster, because we know how great holidays are waiting us. We are full with emotions and one of the emotions comes from the Christmas tree, because we know what is it's role. Somehow, taking down the Christmas tree means that the end of the holidays has come and may be some of us are trying to keep the holidays spirit for longer in their homes. I don't see nothing wrong in that. For me holidays must be every day, so we can fee great ...

There's a guy over here who calls himself "Mr Christmas" as he celebrates it every day, every year without fail! He has cut down on the lighting displays outside as he says it's far too expensive, even though he has an "arrangement" with the electrical supplier. Not heard about him this year so I'm hoping he's not depressed with all these cutbacks!

i hardly put any christmas tree during christmas because i usually on holiday at that time... and my house will be empty as i am only staying with my hubby... so there is no use to put up a christmas tree as there will be no one to look at it... take care and have a nice day...

That makes sense my friend. I put my tree up a little earlier this time because my husband drove me to Mum's 100 miles away on the 17th December and I was there until the 30th. At least I had a few days before taking it back down again, and it did cheer me up when I walked in the door as it can get gloomy in this house during the winter months (the light not very good) so the tree lights, especially, were great!

I think it's more fun to put it up because most people would be in full spirit and looking forward of celebrating Christmas with families. They just want to make Christmas event memorable each year, no wonder most of them maybe buying more beautiful Christmas ornaments and make their trees look better than the last Christmas.

I've had the same Christmas ornaments for a few years now. Mum's are better because she has a mixture of old and new..some of them are quite fragile now so she can't actually use them. The thing is, Woolworths closed and that's where most people used to buy their Christmas tree decorations. If I had to buy new ones I haven't a clue which shop to go in. The likes of Debenhams are OK but charge a fortune. My Woolies decorations were all in one big pack and we already had lights and tinsel so didn't have to buy those. I really miss Woolworths.

Setting the tree up and putting the tree up my kids helped me. What was easier was setting it up and that is purely my fault why taking it down was so much harder. When I put the tree up I brought the huge tote bin that it was in up out of the cellar and into the living room. It was really heavy so I thought when I took it down it would just be easier to leave the empty tote in the cellar and then carry the tree limbs down and put them in the tote down there so I wouldnt have to lift the tote down the stairs. This was horrible lol. I would rather have lugged the heavy tote down the stairs one time they make the about 20 trips up and down the stairs that I made.

Hello Janey1966, I think it the same for me. It not always easy to decorate a tree either especially if over 6 feet tall and person only 5 feet high like me. Going around in circles sorta get me dizzie if you know what I mean. I think it is differnt for each person. Thanks and have a great night Sincerely Unqiue16
